Wound infections are feared complications due to their potential to increase healthcare costs and cause mortality since multidrug-resistant bacteria reduce treatment options. This study reports the development of a carbomer hydrogel containing biogenic silver nanoparticles (bioAgNPs) and its effectiveness in wound treatment. This hydrogel showed in vitro bactericidal activity after 2 h, according to the time-kill assay.

Selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) have recently attracted attention because they combine the benefits of Se and lower toxicity compared to other chemical forms of this element. In this study, SeNPs were synthesized by a green method using ascorbic acid as the reducing agent and polyvinyl alcohol as stabilizer. The nanoparticles were widely characterized.

In view of the current Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic outbreak, the research community is focusing on development of diagnostics, treatment, and vaccines to halt or reverse this scenario. Although there are already various vaccines available, adaptive mutations in the SARS-CoV-2 genome can alter its pathogenic potential and, at the same time, increase the difficulty of developing drugs or immunization by vaccines. Nanotechnology carries a potential to act in all stages in fighting this viral disease, with several possibilities of strategies such as applying nanoparticles directly as antivirals in delivery systems against these viruses or incorporating them in materials, with power of achievement in therapeutics, vaccines and prevention.

The combination of FeO@Ag superparamagnetic hybrid nanoparticles and nitric oxide (NO) represents an innovative strategy for a localized NO delivery with a simultaneous antibacterial and antitumoral actions. Here, we report the design of FeO@Ag hybrid nanoparticles, coated with a modified and nitrosated chitosan polymer, able to release NO in a biological medium. After their synthesis, physicochemical characterization confirmed the obtention of small NO-functionalized superparamagnetic FeO@Ag NPs.

The aim of the current study is to report a simple and efficient method to chemically modify chitosan in order to form S-nitroso-chitosan for antibacterial applications. Firstly, commercial chitosan (CS) was modified to form thiolated chitosan (TCS) based on an easy and environmental-friendly method. TCS was featured based on physicochemical and morphological techniques.

To establish a successful infection, microorganisms have developed strategies to invade host cells. One of the most important human pathogens and the greatest cause of urinary tract infections, Escherichia coli, still do not have its invasion mechanisms fully understood. This work aims to present a new approach for detecting bacterial invasion of lineage cells, based on an enzymatic-fluorogenic method.
