Musculoskeletal pain is a widely experienced public healthcare issue, especially after traumatic muscle injury. Besides, it is a common cause of disability, but this pain remains poorly managed. However, the pathophysiology of traumatic muscle injury-associated pain and inflammation has not been fully elucidated.

Article Synopsis
  • Relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS) is an autoimmune neurological disease that commonly leads to depression and anxiety, which had mainly been studied in models of progressive MS.
  • Researchers developed an experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (RR-EAE) model in female mice to investigate depressive and anxiety-like behaviors without the severe motor impairments seen in progressive MS.
  • The study found that RR-EAE mice exhibited signs of anxiety and depression, such as reduced exploratory behavior and increased immobility, indicating that this model effectively mimics the emotional and neuroinflammatory features of RRMS.

Some people living with HIV present painful sensory neuropathy (HIV-SN) that is pharmacoresistant, sex-associated, and a major source of morbidity. Since the specific mechanisms underlying HIV-SN are not well understood, the aim of our study was to characterize a novel model of painful HIV-SN by combining the HIV-1 gp120 protein and the antiretroviral stavudine (d4T) in mice and to investigate the pronociceptive role of the family 2 voltage-gated calcium channel (VGCC) α1 subunit (Cav2.X channels) in such a model.

Renal vascular reactivity to vasoconstrictors is preserved in sepsis in opposition to what happens in the systemic circulation. We studied whether this distinct behavior was related to α1 adrenergic receptor density, G protein-coupled receptor kinase 2 (GRK2) and the putative role of nitric oxide (NO). Sepsis was induced in female mice by cecal ligation and puncture (CLP).

Central sensitization (CS) is characteristic of difficult to treat painful conditions, such as fibromyalgia and neuropathies and have sexual dimorphism involved. The calcium influx in nociceptive neurons is a key trigger for CS and the role of Cav2.1 and Cav2.
