MIRD method with the Stabin/Segars anthropomorphic representations were used to calculate the absorbed doses in kidneys and uterine wall of an early-stage pregnant woman when Tc (DTPA), Tc (DMSA) and Tc (MAG3) are used for renal studies. Stabin and Segars anatomical representations are phantoms that are used in Monte Carlo calculations to determine the SAF, that with the pharmaceutical residence time are used to calculate the absorbed dose, from source organs, on target organs. Concerns about the impact on the absorbed dose due to the use of the three Tc-based compounds as well as the use of different phantoms were here treated for the case of a female at early pregnant state.

Aquatic and migratory birds, the main reservoir hosts of avian influenza viruses including those with high pathogenic potential, are the wildlife species with the highest risk for viral dissemination across countries and continents. In 2002, the Chilean poultry industry was affected with a highly pathogenic avian influenza strain, which created economic loss and triggered the establishment of a surveillance program in wild birds. This effort consisted of periodic samplings of sick or suspicious animals found along the coast and analyses with standardized techniques for detection of influenza A virus.

Aim: To determine risk parameters associated with high values of high sensitive C-reactive protein (hsCRP) in subjects with different glucose fasting levels.

Methods: Anthropometric parameters, arterial pressure, glycemia, lipid profile, uric acid, and hsCRP were studied in a population of 513 individuals between 40 and 65 years.

Results: In total, 349 (68.

A review of the management of blood supply and its administration during disasters was conducted based on the experience of several events that occurred primarily from 2000-2010, particularly the earthquake that measured 8.8 on the Richter scale that struck central and southern Chile on 27 February 2010. The objective was to provide information that could be useful in improving response plans and strategies during potential future disasters.

About 29% of the adult population of Talca, Chile, suffers from the metabolic syndrome (MS), a value higher than the national prevalence. Evidence indicates that exercise and nutritional changes reduce the predominance of this syndrome. The goal of this study was to evaluate the effects of a structured interventional program of physical activity and nutritional counseling in adults with MS.

Pandemic (H1N1) 2009 virus was detected in breeding turkeys on 2 farms in Valparaiso, Chile. Infection was associated with measurable declines in egg production and shell quality. Although the source of infection is not yet known, the outbreak was controlled, and the virus was eliminated from the birds.

Objective: Insulin resistance (IR) is an important risk factor for type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (DM2) and cardiovascular disease (CVD). Metabolic Syndrome (MS) is a clustering of metabolic alterations associated to IR; however, there is no international consensus for defining its diagnosis. Our objective was to evaluate the prevalence and characteristics of MS identified by the ATP III and IDF criteria in adults from Talca city.

Several families of Talca city, Chile complained to health authorities for what they attributed to consumption of copper (Cu)-contaminated drinking water. We assessed the situation 6-12 mo after the initiation of complaints by characterizing the symptoms reported, the chemistry of drinking water, and the Cu concentration in stagnant drinking water. After completing a census, 1778 households accepted participation and were categorized as follows: category 1, Cu plumbing for tap water and dwellers reporting health complaints (HC); category 2, Cu plumbing for tap water and dwellers reporting no HC; category 3, plastic plumbing for tap water and dwellers reporting no HC.

It is known that polymorphisms of beta (2)-glycoprotein I (beta (2)GPI) in exon 7 affect interaction between the phospholipid binding site and the antibodies, and that other polymorphisms in exon 8 increase the generation of antibodies. In this study, we analyzed genetic polymorphisms of beta (2)GPI in unselected Chilean patients to determine the prevalence of beta (2)GPI polymorphisms in the phospholipid domain in patients with venous and arterial thrombosis and the clinical correlation with thromboembolic complications. This study comprised 149 patients with venous and arterial thrombosis (62 with venous thrombosis and 87 with arterial thrombosis) and 160 healthy controls with no previous history of thrombosis.

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is complicated by vascular and neurological events. Antiphospholipid (aPL) antibodies have already been associated with many clinical conditions, including venous and arterial thrombosis, as well as recurrent fetal loss. However, a significant association between aPL antibodies and DM has not been widely reported yet.

Background: Thrombophilia is defined as an altered hemostasis that predisposes to thrombosis. It can be primary when there is a family clustering of the disease or secondary, when it is associated to an acquired risk factor.

Aim: To report clinical features in a series of patients with primary thrombophilia.

The mechanism by which homocysteine (Hcy) causes endothelial dysfunction is probably mediated by oxidative stress. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of oxidative stress on endothelial function in young and elderly hyperhomocysteinemic (HHcy) men. A total of 35 HHcy (Hcy > 15 micro mol/L), young (n = 15; 20-40 y) and elderly men (n = 20; > 65 y) and 33 normohomocysteinemic (NHcy; controls) young (n = 14) and elderly (n = 19) men (Hcy < 13 micro mol/L), without classic cardiovascular risk factors were recruited.

Antiphospholipid antibodies (aPL) are a heterogeneous family of antibodies associated with thrombotic events and other complications. The objective of this study was to investigate the prevalence of aPL in a group of Chilean patients with thrombosis. Two hundred and twenty-six patients with venous and arterial thrombosis and 95 healthy controls were studied.

Antiphospholipid antibodies (aPLs) are a heterogeneous family of antibodies found in autoimmune disorders, infectious diseases, and other situations. The presence of different aPLs has been associated with various clinical manifestations of the antiphospholipid syndrome (APS). The objective of this study was to investigate the prevalence of aPLs in a group of 90 Chilean patients with systemic lupus erytematosus (SLE) and 90 healthy controls.
