Spin Glass State in Strained LaCaMnO Thin Films.

Epitaxial strain modifies the physical properties of thin films deposited on single-crystal substrates. In a previous work, we demonstrated that in the case of LaCaMnO thin films the strain induced by the substrate can produce the segregation of a non-ferromagnetic layer (NFL) at the top surface of ferromagnetic epitaxial LaCaMnO for a critical value of the tetragonality τ, defined as = | - |, of τ ≈ 0.024.

Olfaction plays an important role in human social communication, including multiple domains in which people often rely on their sense of smell in the social context. The importance of the sense of smell and its role can however vary inter-individually and culturally. In Venezuela, a total of 363,466 malaria cases were reported between 1999-2009. Several states are experiencing malaria epidemics, increasing the risk of vector and possibly transfusion transmission. We investigated the risk of transfusion transmission in blood banks from endemic and non-endemic areas of Venezuela by examining blood donations for evidence of malaria infection.

[Demographic distribution and prevalence of overactive bladder in Venezuela].

Objective: There is a lack of information regarding overactive bladder (OAB) in South America. Our aim in this study was to estimate the prevalence of overactive bladder (OAB) in Venezuela based on the 2002 International Continence Society (ICS) consensus criteria and also to verify its demographic distribution in this country.

Subjects And Methods: We performed a multicentric prospective evaluation of patients from 2003 to 2007 in different cities in Venezuela.

Fractalization drives crystalline states in a frustrated spin system.

The fractalized Hofstadter butterfly energy spectrum predicted for magnetically confined fermions diffracted by a crystal lattice has remained beyond the reach of laboratory-accessible magnetic fields. We find the geometrically frustrated spin system SrCu(2)(BO(3))(2) to provide a sterling demonstration of a system in which bosons confined by a magnetic and lattice potential mimic the behavior of fermions in the extreme quantum limit, giving rise to a sequence of plateaus at all magnetization m(z)/m(sat) = 1/q ratios 9 > or = q > or = 2 and p/q = 2/9 (m(sat) is the saturation magnetization) in magnetic fields up to 85 T and temperatures down to 29 mK, within the sequence of previously identified plateaus at 1/8, 1/4, and 1/3 of the saturated magnetization. We identify this hierarchy of plateaus as a consequence of confined bosons in SrCu(2)(BO(3))(2) mimicking the high magnetic field fractalization predicted by the Hofstadter butterfly for fermionic systems.

Detection of specific antibodies to Plasmodium falciparum in blood bank donors from malaria-endemic and non-endemic areas of Venezuela.

Malaria antibody detection is valuable in providing retrospective confirmation of an attack of malaria. Blood bank screening is another area were malaria serology is potentially useful.
