Article Synopsis
  • Larynx preservation is the standard treatment for advanced laryngeal/hypopharyngeal tumors, but not all patients respond well; the TALK score model assesses various patient factors to identify suitable candidates for this treatment.
  • A study evaluated 175 patients who underwent treatment from 2008 to 2015, revealing high rates of smoking and alcohol use among participants, and a distribution of tumors between the larynx and hypopharynx.
  • Although the TALK score wasn't effective in predicting who would maintain larynx preservation over three years, it accurately forecasted overall survival and laryngectomy-free survival, assisting clinicians in determining treatment paths for patients.

Background: Optimal timing for tracheotomy for critically ill COVID-19 patients requiring invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV) is not established.

Methods: Multicenter prospective cohort including all COVID-19 patients admitted to intensive care units (ICUs) in 36 hospitals who required tracheotomy during first pandemic wave. With a target emulation trial framework, we studied the causal effects of early (7-10 days) versus late (>10 days) tracheotomy (LT) on time from tracheotomy to weaning, postoperative mortality, and tracheotomy complications.

Cetuximab is a monoclonal antibody against epidermal growth factor receptor useful in the treatment of patients with Head and Neck Squamous Cell Carcinoma combined with radiotherapy or chemotherapy. Its pharmacokinetics are not influenced by hepatic status and there are no specific warnings concerning its indication in patients with impaired hepatic function. Patients with a previous liver transplant are at risk for hepatic toxicity and use immunosupressants to avoid rejection that can interact with other drugs.
