Background: Today, nearly two thirds of inpatients in trauma surgery hospitals are over 70 years old and at significant risk for comorbidities. These patients frequently suffer delirium. Demographic development in Germany has led to an aging of the population. Cement-augmented pedicle screws can increase the stability of fixators for unstable vertebral fractures in the elderly. Fixators can be inserted quickly and with minimally invasive techniques, reducing surgical risks. The renin-secreting juxtaglomerular cells (JGC) in the media of the afferent arteriole at the vessel pole are the major source of circulating renin. The control of renin secretion is complex with increases in cAMP being the major stimulus and increases in intracellular free Ca2+ concentration ([Ca2+]i) being inhibitory.
