The 1917 Halifax Explosion was an unfortunate but predictable tragedy, given the sea traffic and munitions cargo, resulting in sudden large-scale damage and catastrophic injuries, with 1950 dead and 8000 injured. Although generous support was received from the United States, the bulk of the medical work was undertaken using local resources through an immediate, massive, centrally coordinated medical response. The incredible care provided 100 years ago by these Canadian physicians, nurses and students is often forgotten, but deserves attention.

Anthropogenic atmospheric CO2 reacts with water to form carbonic acid (H2CO3) which increases water acidity. While marine acidification has received recent consideration, less attention has been paid to the effects of atmospheric carbon dioxide on freshwater systems-systems that often have low buffering potential. Since many aquatic systems are already impacted by pollutants such as heavy metals, we wondered about the added effect of rising atmospheric CO2 on freshwater organisms.

We compared differences in self-concept change across three years after short-(STG) and long-term (LTG) psychodynamic group psychotherapy, in a mixed sample of outpatients. Self-concept was assessed at baseline and three years later, using the Structural Analysis of Social Behavior Questionnaire. Vector scores Affiliation and Autonomy were primary, and the eight cluster scores-self-free, self-affirm, self-love, self-protect, self-control, self-blame, self-attack, and self-neglect-were secondary outcome measures.

In an inhomogeneous static field, the pulse sequence 90°(x)-(τ-90°(y)-τ)(n) results in a train of echoes, the amplitudes of which settle to be proportional to M(0)/2 after a transient period. Analysis of the spin dynamics of the general τ-β°-τ refocusing cycle reveals that for ideal RF pulses, adding a preparation pulse followed by a delay to the above sequence can either eliminate the transient behavior, or increase the asymptotic echo intensity. This is achieved by controlling the alignment between the magnetization m and the rotation axis of the refocusing cycle.

The aim of the present study was to explore further a highly successful therapy for this subgroup with a single case study in a randomized, controlled study of long-term effects of dynamic psychotherapy with a patient who was depressed and felt exploitable. Case formulation, transcription of sessions, and repeated applications of self-reports and observer-rated measures, both during and after therapy, are used.

MRI has considerable potential as a non-destructive probe of porous media, permitting rapid quantification of local fluid content and the possibility of local flow visualization and quantification. In this work we explore a general approach to flow velocity measurement in porous media by combining Cotts pulsed field gradient flow encoding with SPRITE MRI. This technique permits facile and accurate flow and dispersion coefficient mapping of fluids in porous media.

Water transport and water management are fundamental to polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell operation. Accurate measurements of water content within and across the Nafion layer are required to elucidate water transport behavior and validate existing numerical models. The design and construction of a unilateral NMR (UMR) magnet assembly for near-surface 1D profiling is presented. The arrangement consists of a single permanent magnet topped with a shaped iron pole cap. The analytically determined profile of the pole cap shapes the field over the magnet, giving a constant gradient of 31 G/cm over a 8mm depth at a 1H frequency of 4.

When fluid saturated porous media are subjected to an applied uniform magnetic field, an internal magnetic field, inside the pore space, is induced due to magnetic susceptibility differences between the pore-filling fluid and the solid matrix. The microscopic distribution of the internal magnetic field, and its gradients, was simulated based on the thin-section pore structure of a sedimentary rock. The simulation results were verified experimentally.

Traditionally, unilateral NMR systems such as the NMR-MOUSE have used the fringe field between two bar magnets joined with a yoke in a 'U' geometry. This allows NMR signals to be acquired from a sensitive volume displaced from the magnets, permitting large samples to be investigated. The drawback of this approach is that the static field (B0) generated in this configuration is inhomogeneous, and has a large, nonlinear, gradient.

The results of a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) investigation concerning the effects of an aluminum honeycomb sandwich panel on the B1 and B0 fields and on subsequent image quality are presented. Although the sandwich panel structure, representative of an aircraft composite material, distorts B0 and attenuates B1, distortion-free imaging is possible using single point (constant time) imaging techniques. A new expression is derived for the error caused by gradient field distortion due to the heterogeneous magnetic susceptibility within a sample and this error is shown not to cause geometric distortion in the image.

The object of the paper is to present results that show that impedance spectroscopy is an accurate method of assessing the condition of muscle tissue. Specimens of muscle tissue were excised from 36 Atlantic salmon and subjected to impedance spectroscopy measurements made at intervals during an 8h period of ischaemia and necrosis. These measurements were conducted for three different temperatures and for both the longitudinal and the transverse orientations of the muscle fibres.
