The study describes the complete mitochondrial genome of the Guérin-Méneville 1855 strain Luhong, a mutant with distinct red skin color, for the first time.
The mitochondrial genome is 15,563 bp long, making it the smallest among the sequenced inbred strains, and shares the same gene order as six other known mitochondrial genomes.
Phylogenetic analysis groups Luhong with four yellow-skinned strains, supporting the idea that these strains share a common lineage known as the yellow blood lineage.
