Detecting trace amounts of aflatoxin B (AFB), one of the most toxic food contaminants, is crucial for efficiently preventing potential health risks. Circular aptamers are promising candidates for bioanalytical applications due to their enhanced biological and structural stability as well as their compatibility with rolling circle amplification (RCA). Herein, we employed a high-efficiency magnetic chain graphene oxide-based SELEX to generate circular aptamers that bind AFB with high affinity and selectivity.

Objective: While previous studies have explored the relationship between obesity and levels of thyroid autoantibodies, research using novel indicators such as weight-adjusted waist index (WWI) remains limited. This study aimed to evaluate the potential relationship between WWI and thyroid autoantibody levels, with the objective of improving our understanding of the links between central obesity and Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT).

Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) cycles from 2007 to 2012.

Background: Although childhood maltreatment (CM) is widely recognized as a transdiagnostic risk factor for various internalizing and externalizing psychological disorders, the neural basis underlying this association remain unclear. The potential reasons for the inconsistent findings may be attributed to the involvement of both common and specific neural pathways that mediate the influence of childhood maltreatment on the emergence of psychopathological conditions.

Methods: This study aimed to delineate both the common and distinct neural pathways linking childhood maltreatment to depression and aggression.

Factor XIa (FXIa) is a plasma protease that catalyzes the intrinsic pathway of blood coagulation, thus being regarded as a promising antithrombotic target. Circular DNA aptamers, with their dramatically enhanced biological and structural stability, hold great potential as new-generation DNA-based anticoagulants. However, the functional selection of circular aptamers and large-scale synthesis of them remains a substantial challenge.

The management of papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) concurrent with Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT) lacks standardized guidelines, especially concerning surgical strategies. This study aimed to compare unilateral thyroidectomy (UT) with total thyroidectomy (TT) in PTC-HT patients to optimize clinical management and improve postoperative outcomes. This retrospective study included PTC-HT patients undergoing thyroid surgery at a tertiary academic medical institution from January 2018 to August 2023.

Objective: Depression is increasingly prevalent among adolescents, with parents' socioeconomic status (SES) serving as significant predictors. Understanding the link between parents' SES and college students' depressive symptoms is of paramount concern. However, the neural basis linking the association between parents' SES and students' depressive symptoms still remains to be explored.

Polyvinylpolypyrrolidone (PVPP) is commonly employed for fining in fruit wine brewing. This study aimed to investigate the impact of PVPP pretreatment on the formation of fermentation aroma and polyphenol distribution in Rosa roxburghii Tratt (RRT) wine. A significant effect of PVPP on polyphenol adsorption was observed, and polyphenol families or subfamilies such as flavanols and flavonols showed specific affinity for PVPP, decreasing by over 19 % and 30 %, respectively.

Background: Rabies continues to be a significant global public health concern, particularly in the Asia region where it is associated with high mortality rate. The administration of effective vaccination is essential in preventing this potentially fatal viral infection. The objective of this study was to evaluate the immunogenicity and safety of two rabies vaccination schedules: the Zagreb (2-1-1) and Essen (1-1-1-1-1) regimens, in a cohort of healthy Chinese individuals aged 10-60 years.

Background: Hypospadias with lichen sclerosus (LS) poses surgical challenges due to lack of materials for urethral reconstruction and coverage and the limited number of reports on this clinical condition.

Objectives: To report surgical strategies and outcomes for primary and redo hypospadias patients with LS.

Materials And Methods: We conducted a retrospective observational descriptive study with 31 patients with primary/redo hypospadias and LS between 2013 and 2023.

Article Synopsis
  • Pilocytic astrocytoma (PA) is a benign brain tumor where the extent of surgical resection (complete vs. partial) is crucial for patient prognosis; however, there's limited research comparing two specific resection types (GTR vs. GTL).
  • The study utilized data from the SEER database to analyze survival outcomes based on different surgical approaches, employing statistical methods like multivariate logistic regression and Kaplan-Meier curves.
  • Results indicated that while age, tumor location, and treatment methods affect survival, GTR did not significantly reduce mortality risk compared to GTL, with no notable difference in survival outcomes between these two groups.

In recent years, the rapid development of dynamically tunable metasurfaces has provided a new avenue for flexible control of optical properties. This paper introduces a transmission-type electrically tunable metasurface, employing a series of subwavelength-scale silicon (Si) nanoring structures with an intermediate layer of AlO-ITO-AlO. This design allows the metasurface to induce strong Mie resonance when transverse electric (TE) waves are normally incident.

  • Acute angle-closure glaucoma (AACG) cases surged after the relaxation of COVID-19 restrictions in China, raising concerns about its impact on visual health.
  • The study compared patient data across different time periods—before, during, and after the COVID-19 outbreak—to understand trends in demographics and clinical profiles of AACG patients.
  • Findings revealed a notable increase in AACG diagnoses during the outbreak, with younger patients and a higher occurrence of bilateral cases, especially among those confirmed to have had COVID-19.

  • Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) for patients with large annulus and aortic regurgitation (AR) was studied to assess clinical outcomes and the safety of using 3D printing for procedural simulation.
  • A total of 125 patients were divided into those who had a 3D simulation (43) and those who did not (82), with results showing better outcomes in the simulation group, including a higher use of extra oversizing for transcatheter heart valves (THVs).
  • The study concluded that using 3D printing guidance for TAVR can enhance safety and feasibility, with specific factors like extra oversizing and coaxiality being key predictors of success or complications post-procedure.

Article Synopsis
  • A study was conducted to investigate the clinical and retinal imaging features of Chinese patients with acute macular neuroretinopathy (AMN) linked to COVID-19, indicating an increase in cases associated with the pandemic.
  • The study involved thorough retinal imaging assessments and revealed that many patients experienced a short interval between fever onset and eye symptoms, with a majority showing bilateral effects.
  • Notable retinal changes included hemorrhages and specific lesions that differ from typical presentations of AMN, highlighting potential biomarkers for microcirculation issues in COVID-19 patients.*

Ammonia nitrogen (NH-N) and total phosphorus (TP) were the major control pollutants in the Yangtze River Basin. Based on measured data from 2003 to 2020, the temporal and spatial variations in concentrations and fluxes of NH-N and TP in the Jianli to Hankou (JL-HK) reach of the Middle Yangtze River were studied, and the impacts of flow-sediment factors, tributary inflows, and others on variations in NH-N and TP fluxes were discussed. The results showed that: ① In recent years, NH-N and TP concentrations in the mainstream have declined significantly, with annual NH-N and TP concentrations at each monitoring station in 2020 averagely decreasing by 41% and 34% compared to those in 2003, respectively.

This study was conducted retrospectively on a cohort of 68 patients with steroid 5 α-reductase 2 (SRD5A2) deficiency and 46,XY disorders of sex development (DSD). Whole-exon sequencing revealed 28 variants of SRD5A2, and further analysis identified seven novel mutants. The preponderance of variants was observed in exon 1 and exon 4, specifically within the nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH)-binding region.
