Lipid signalling molecules are essential components of the processes that allow one extracellular signal to be transferred inside the nucleus, where specific lipid second messengers elicit reactions capable of regulating gene transcription, DNA replication or repair and DNA cleavage, eventually resulting in cell growth, differentiation, apoptosis or many other cell functions. Nuclear inositides are independently regulated, suggesting that the nucleus constitutes a functionally distinct compartment of inositol lipids metabolism. Indeed, nuclear inositol lipids themselves can modulate nuclear processes, such as transcription and pre-mRNA splicing, growth, proliferation, cell cycle regulation and differentiation.

In this study, starting from human dental pulp cells cultured in vitro, we simulated reparative dentinogenesis using a medium supplemented with different odontogenic inductors. The differentiation of dental pulp cells in odontoblast-like cells was evaluated by means of staining, and ultramorphological, biochemical and biomolecular methods. Alizarin red staining showed mineral deposition while transmission electron microscopy revealed a synthesis of extracellular matrix fibers during the differentiation process.

Background And Aims: Ascertainment bias (AB) indicates a bias of an evaluation centre in estimating the prevalence/incidence of a disease due to the specific expertise of the centre. The aim of our study was to evaluate classification of different types of dementia in new cases appearing in secondary and tertiary centres, in order to evidence possible occurrence of AB in the various (secondary to tertiary) dementia centres.

Methods: To assess the mechanism of AB, the rates of new cases of the different forms of dementia reported by different centres were compared.

Recently the Italian Supreme Court has sentenced that garrets not suitable for common usage belong to the owners of the dwellings positioned below. These spaces may be transformed into living areas, which is particularly convenient in this moment of housing shortage. In this study the authors analyze the minimum hygienic requirements for transformed garrets established by each regional law, and underline the considerable differences authorized by the laws.

Article Synopsis
  • Psychological factors may play a significant role in predicting cardiovascular disease in HIV patients, with a focus on alexithymia as a notable predictor.
  • A study involving 232 HIV patients assessed various psychological and traditional cardiovascular risk factors, finding a connection between higher alexithymia scores and increased vascular issues.
  • Key findings indicated that older age, current smoking, and high alexithymia scores were independently linked to adverse vascular events during follow-up, highlighting the importance of addressing psychological health in HIV treatment.

The celiac trunk is one of the main arteries arising from abdominal aorta and supplies blood to several abdominal organs. The typical branching in left gastric, splenic and common hepatic arteries undergoes relatively frequent variations. The authors report a rare variation of the celiac trunk in a Caucasian cadaver, with a hepato-gastric and a spleno-mesenteric arterial trunks which arise from the abdominal aorta in a routine dissection of a 98-year-old male cadaver.

It is well recognized that depression is independently associated with cardiovascular events. However, uncertainties remain on the pathophysiological pathways underlying the association between depression and coronary heart disease. In addition to the traditional cardiovascular risk factors, autonomic nervous system (ANS), low grade of inflammation, platelet and hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis function and genetic factors may adversely impact the endothelium of the arterial wall.

In the first half of this year the experts of the Italian Society of Hygiene (SItI), along with those of other National Scientific Societies, agreed with the recommendations made by the USA CDC in 2009, and developed a proposal for a vaccination schedule (Vaccine Schedule for Life), in which influenza vaccination is recommended for all adults aged between 50 and 64 years. In the National Plan for Vaccinal Prevention 2012-2014, which was published just before the issue of the SItI Calendar but concluded earlier (end of 2011), influenza vaccination is recommended "only" for all persons > or = 65 years or included in one of the many at-risk categories. The issue is controversial and has generated considerable debate at national and international level.

Hyperimmune globulins were reported to prevent and treat fetal cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection during pregnancy. Here, we report that infusions of standard human intravenous immunoglobulin significantly increase CMV IgG titers and avidity indexes in pregnant women, paving the way to their use for passive transfer of maternal CMV humoral immunity to fetuses. Preliminary data on perinatal outcomes of the first 67 newborns are encouraging.

Myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS), clonal hematopoietic stem-cell disorders mainly affecting older adult patients, show ineffective hematopoiesis in one or more of the lineages of the bone marrow. A number of MDS progresses to acute myeloid leukemia (AML) with the involvement of genetic and epigenetic mechanisms affecting PI-PLC β1. The molecular mechanisms underlying the MDS evolution to AML are still unclear, even though it is now clear that the nuclear signaling elicited by PI-PLC β1, Cyclin D3, and Akt plays an important role in the control of the balance between cell cycle progression and apoptosis in both normal and pathologic conditions.

The objective of this work is to compare the effectiveness and the side effects of two different drugs, amoxicillin and clavulanic acid vs ceftazidime, used as antibiotic prophylaxis in the surgical extraction of third molars and to demonstrate that the use of second choice antibiotic has no significant advantages in comparison with a first choice antibiotic. One hundred and seven patients with impacted third molar were selected and divided into two groups: amoxicillin and clavulanic acid were administered to group 1 and ceftazidime to group 2 for five days after surgery and we observed the postoperative period. The statistical analysis showed no differences between the two groups which lead to the conclusion that there is no indication to routinely administrate intramuscular second-choice antibiotic prophylatic therapy (ceftazidime) in case of surgical extraction of the third molar.

Fifteen meta-analyses have been published between 1995 and 2011 to evaluate the efficacy/effectiveness and harms of diverse influenza vaccines--seasonal, H5N1 and 2009 (H1N1)--in various age-classes (healthy children, adults or elderly). These meta-analyses have often adopted different analyses and study selection criteria. Because it is difficult to have a clear picture of vaccine benefits and harms examining single systematic reviews, we compiled the main findings and evaluated which could be the most reasonable explanations for some differences in findings (or their interpretation) across previously published meta-analyses.
