Introduction: Germline predisposition to myeloid neoplasms can be suspected in patients younger than 50 years or when harboring mutations with a variant allele frequency (VAF) higher than 30% for point mutations in specific genes. To investigate the VAF thresholds' accuracy we have explored the prevalence of germline variants below the 30% VAF threshold.

Methods: A total of 40 variants with VAF lower than 30% in bone marrow samples of myeloid neoplasm patients were selected and studied in CD3 cells.

The aim of this investigation is to explore the relationship between Optimist sailing performance with boat steadiness as well as the steadiness of cyclic variables related to sailors' technique, in the upwind leg of a regatta. Thirty-two sailors from the optimist class (16 bottom level and 16 top level) performed a regatta in a semi-immersive simulator which measures the instantaneous velocity, heading, boom, heel, and rudder angle and hiking effort. It was calculated the mean values as well as the short-term steadiness and long-term steadiness throughout the test.

Unlabelled: In December 2022, an alert was published in the UK and other European countries reporting an unusual increase in the incidence of infections. Our aim was to describe the clinical, microbiological, and molecular characteristics of group A invasive infections (iGAS) in children prospectively recruited in Spain (September 2022-March 2023), and compare invasive strains with strains causing mild infections. One hundred thirty isolates of causing infection (102 iGAS and 28 mild infections) were included in the microbiological study: typing, antimicrobial susceptibility testing, and sequencing for core genome multilocus sequence typing (cgMLST), resistome, and virulome analysis.

Unlabelled: Alterations in epigenetic marks, such as DNA methylation, represent a hallmark of cancer that has been successfully exploited for therapy in myeloid malignancies. Hypomethylating agents (HMA), such as azacitidine, have become standard-of-care therapy to treat myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS), myeloid neoplasms that can evolve into acute myeloid leukemia. However, our capacity to identify who will respond to HMAs, and the duration of response, remains limited.

Next-generation sequencing (NGS) tools have importantly helped the classification of myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS), guiding the management of patients. However, new concerns are under debate regarding their implementation in routine clinical practice for the identification of germline predisposition. Cost-effective targeted NGS tools would improve the current standardized studies and genetic counseling.

Free-living cats usually live in colonies in urban areas, especially close to parks and neighbourhoods where people feed them without any sanitary control. This can pose a human, animal and environmental health concern due to the close contact between uncontrolled colonies, the population and other domestic and/or wild animals. Thus, this study aimed to assess the genetic diversity and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) among Salmonella enterica subsp.

The global emergence of antimicrobial-resistant (AMR) strains of Salmonella and Campylobacter is a serious public health concern. Both bacteria are leading causes of human gastrointestinal foodborne infections and the two most reported zoonoses in the European Union. By feeding on livestock carcasses, especially from intensive farming, as well as on landfill sites, obligate avian scavengers can become infected with zoonotic pathogens and AMR strains, and can be considered large-scale sentinels of the environmental burden.

Article Synopsis
  • A study involving 13 hospitals in Spain examined the transmission of SARS-CoV-2 to newborns and included data from 177 infants exposed during pregnancy.
  • Results showed 5.1% of the newborns tested positive for SARS-CoV-2, with 1.7% of cases attributed to intrauterine transmission and 3.4% to transmission during delivery or shortly after birth.
  • Most infected newborns were either asymptomatic or had mild symptoms, and maternal factors did not significantly affect the risk of transmission, despite the presence of the virus in urine and meconium samples.

The absorption coefficient of a material is classically determined by measuring the transmittance of a homogeneous sample contained within flat optical faces and under collimated illumination. For arbitrary shapes this method is impracticable. The characterization of inhomogeneous or randomly distributed samples such as granules, powders or fibers suffers the same problem.

Myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) are a heterogeneous group of hematological diseases. Among them, the most well characterized subtype is MDS with isolated chromosome 5q deletion (MDS del(5q)), which is the only one defined by a cytogenetic abnormality that makes these patients candidates to be treated with lenalidomide. During the last decade, single cell (SC) analysis has emerged as a powerful tool to decipher clonal architecture and to further understand cancer and other diseases at higher resolution level compared to bulk sequencing techniques.
