What do we know about how children and adolescents conceptualise violence? A systematic review and meta-synthesis of qualitative studies from sub-Saharan Africa.

Background: Half of the world's children experience violence every year, but the meaning of violence is not universally agreed. We may therefore risk failing to measure, and address, the acts that matter most to children and adolescents. In this paper, we describe and synthesise evidence on how children and adolescents in sub-Saharan Africa conceptualise different behavioural acts which are deemed violence in childhood under WHO and UN CRC definitions.

Can the 'Learn in peace, educate without violence' intervention in Cote d'Ivoire reduce teacher violence? Development of a theory of change and formative evaluation results.

Objectives: To gather evidence on whether a brief intervention (Apprendre en paix et éduquer sans violence, developed by the Ivorian Ministry of Education and Graines de Paix) to promote peace in primary schools by reducing teacher violence perpetration and improving pedagogical techniques was acceptable to teachers and affected change in intermediate outcomes.

Design: Mixed-methods formative research.

Setting: Primary schools in Tonkpi region, Cote d'Ivoire.

Coverage of antenatal, intrapartum, and newborn care in 104 districts of Ethiopia: A before and after study four years after the launch of the national Community-Based Newborn Care programme.

Background: Access to health services across the continuum of care improves maternal and newborn health outcomes. Ethiopia launched the Community-Based Newborn Care programme in 2013 to increase the coverage of antenatal care, institutional delivery, postnatal care and newborn care. The programme also introduced gentamicin and amoxicillin treatment by health extension workers for young infants with possible serious bacterial infection when referral was not possible.

Evidence-based priority setting for health care and research: tools to support policy in maternal, neonatal, and child health in Africa.

The effect of case management on childhood pneumonia mortality in developing countries.

Background: With the aim of populating the Lives Saved Tool (LiST) with parameters of effectiveness of existing interventions, we conducted a systematic review of the literature assessing the effect of pneumonia case management on mortality from childhood pneumonia.

Methods: This review covered the following interventions: community case management with antibiotic treatment, and hospital treatment with antibiotics, oxygen, zinc and vitamin A. Pneumonia mortality outcomes were sought where available but data were also recorded on secondary outcomes.
