Persistent luminescence materials have applications in diverse fields such as smart signaling, anticounterfeiting, and in vivo imaging. However, the lack of a thorough understanding of the precise mechanisms that govern persistent luminescence makes it difficult to develop ways to optimize it. Here we present an accurate model to describe the various processes that determine persistent luminescence in ZnGaO:Cr, a workhorse material in the field.

Antimicrobial resistance is a threat to public health for which new treatments are urgently required. The capability of bacteria to form biofilms is of particular concern as it enables high bacterial tolerance to conventional therapies by reducing drug diffusion through the dense, exopolymeric biofilm matrix and the upregulation of antimicrobial resistance machinery. Quorum sensing (QS), a process where bacteria use diffusible chemical signals to coordinate group behaviour, has been shown to be closely interconnected with biofilm formation and bacterial virulence in many top priority pathogens including .

Unlabelled: Chronic wound infections are generally of polymicrobial nature with aerobic and anaerobic bacteria, as well as fungi frequently observed in them. Wound treatment involves a series of steps, including debridement of the wound, flushing, and often the use of multiple wound dressings many of which are antimicrobial. Yet, many wound dressings are tested versus single species of planktonic microbes, which fails to mirror the real-life presence of biofilms.

To tackle the emerging antibiotic resistance crisis, novel antimicrobial approaches are urgently needed. Bacterial biofilms are a particular concern in this context as they are responsible for over 80% of bacterial infections and are inherently more recalcitrant toward antimicrobial treatments. The high tolerance of biofilms to conventional antibiotics has been attributed to several factors, including reduced drug diffusion through the dense exopolymeric matrix and the upregulation of antimicrobial resistance machinery with successful biofilm eradication requiring prolonged high doses of multidrug treatments.

is one of the top priority pathogens that requires immediate attention according to the World Health Organisation (WHO). Due to the alarming shortage of novel antimicrobials, targeting quorum sensing (QS), a bacterial cell to cell signaling system controlling virulence, has emerged as a promising approach as an antibiotic adjuvant therapy. Interference with the system, one of three QS systems in , results in reduction of bacterial virulence gene expression and biofilm maturation.

Lanthanide-doped upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs), as multifunctional light sources, are finding utility in diverse applications ranging from biotechnology to light harvesting. However, the main challenge in realizing their full potential lies in achieving bright and efficient photon upconversion (UC). In this study, we present a novel approach to fabricate an array of gold nanoantennas arranged in a hexagonal lattice using a simple and inexpensive colloidal lithography technique, and demonstrate a significant enhancement of UC photoluminescence (UCPL) by up to 35-fold through plasmon-enhanced photoexcitation and emission.

In the placement of dental implants, the primary fixation between the dental implant and the bone is of great importance and corresponds to compressive mechanical fixation that aims to prevent micromovement of the implant. The aim of this research was to determine the role of roughness and the type of dental implant (tissue-level or bone-level) in implant stability, measured using resonance frequency analysis (RFA) and insertion torque (IT). We analyzed 234 titanium dental implants, placed in fresh calf ribs, at the half-tissue level and half-bone level.

Background: The effect of alirocumab, a PCSK9 (proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9) inhibitor, on coronary plaque burden in patients with familial hypercholesterolemia has not been addressed. Our aim was to assess changes in coronary plaque burden and its characteristics after treatment with alirocumab by quantification and characterization of atherosclerotic plaque throughout the coronary tree on the basis of a noninvasive analysis of coronary computed tomographic angiography in asymptomatic subjects with familial hypercholesterolemia receiving optimized and stable treatment with maximum tolerated statin dose with or without ezetimibe.

Methods: This study is a phase IV, open-label, multicenter, single-arm clinical trial to assess changes in coronary plaque burden and its characteristics after 78 weeks of treatment with alirocumab in patients with familial hypercholesterolemia without clinical atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease.

Previously, metabolites diffused or secreted from microbial samples have been analyzed via liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) approaches following lengthy extraction protocols. Here, we present a model system for growing biofilms on discs before utilizing rapid and direct surface sampling MS, namely, liquid extraction surface analysis, to study the microbial exometabolome. One of the benefits of this approach is its surface-specific nature, enabling mimicking biofilm formation in a way that the study of planktonic liquid cultures cannot imitate.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a global threat to public health with a forecast of a negative financial impact of one trillion dollars per annum, hence novel therapeutics are urgently needed. The resistance of many bacteria against current drugs is further augmented by the ability of these microbes to form biofilms where cells are encased in a slimy extracellular matrix and either adhered to a surface or forming cell aggregates. Biofilms form physiochemical barriers against the penetration of treatments such as small molecule antibacterials, rendering most treatments ineffective.
