Article Synopsis
  • Vasoactive peptides, especially calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP), may influence the immune response in COVID-19, suggesting that blocking CGRP might reduce lung damage from the virus.
  • A study compared CGRP levels in 51 healthy individuals and 52 hospitalized COVID-19 patients, examining how health conditions and treatments impacted these levels.
  • Results indicated significantly higher CGRP levels in COVID-19 patients, particularly influenced by conditions like hypertension and treatments, pointing to CGRP's potential role in the disease's severity and progression.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the COVID-GRAM and CURB-65 scores in predicting the severity of COVID-19 in Caucasian patients.
  • A total of 523 patients were analyzed, revealing that a higher COVID-GRAM score significantly correlated with increased rates of critical illness and mortality compared to CURB-65 scores.
  • The findings suggest that the COVID-GRAM score is a reliable tool for assessing the risk of severe illness in these patients, with the CURB-65 score serving as a useful alternative.

The safety and efficacy of treatment of infectious endocarditis (IE) was evaluated within a program of hospital-in-home (HIH) based on self-administered outpatient parenteral antimicrobial therapy (S-OPAT). IE episodes (n=48 in 45 patients; 71% middle-aged males) were recruited into the HIH program between 1998 and 2012. Following treatment stabilization at the hospital they returned home for HIH in which a physician and/or a nurse supervised the S-OPAT.
