Audiology is the science of hearing and auditory processes study. The evaluation of hearing capacity is commonly performed by an audiologist using an audiometer, where the patient is asked to show some kind of sign when he or she recognizes the stimulus. This evaluation becomes much more complicated when the patient suffers some type of cognitive decline that hinders the emission of visible signs of recognition.

This study was designed to validate a new software application designed to characterize the tear film lipid layer through texture and color pattern recognition.
Methods: Using the Tearscope-plus (slit-lamp magnification ×200), the lipid layer was examined in 105 healthy young adults, and interference photographs were acquired with a Topcon DV-3 digital camera.

There are some evidence of the association between the calibre of the retinal blood vessels and hypertension. Computer-assisted procedures have been proposed to measure the calibre of retinal blood vessels from high-resolution photopraphs. Most of them are in fact semi-automatic.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFBackground And Objective: Early alterations in retinal microcirculation are observed in most hypertensive patients seen in daily practice and the European guidelines consider it is necessary an objective method to quantify these alterations. We have previously described a semi-automatic computerized system to evaluate the calibre of retinal blood vessels that has shown high sensitivity and specificity to calculate the arteriovenous ratio (AVR), though with limitations. We describe a method based on the snakes model to calculate the arteriovenous ratio.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFObjective: To validate a computer-based method for measuring the calibre of retinal blood vessels, and use it to determine the effects of ageing and arterial hypertension on the calibres of these vessels and on their ratio.
Methods: Digital eye fundus images covering a 50 degrees field and centred on the optic disc were obtained using a 540 nm filter. The boundaries of blood vessels crossing a series of circles concentric with the optic disc were located by an image analysis program; the calibres of vessels crossing the circles perpendicularly were determined automatically, the average arteriole and average vein calibres were calculated, and the arteriovenous ratio (AVR) was calculated as the ratio of these averages.
