Background A growing number of men who have sex with men (MSM) utilise Grindr for seeking relationships and immediate/casual sexual encounters. Grindr and other mobile applications can be a valuable source of information on sociological predictors of health. One topic that is under reported is the use of Grindr by MSM with obesity.

Sexual minority individuals display heightened body image disturbance, which is associated with negative health outcomes. Structural stigmas are associated with negative health outcomes among sexual minority individuals, but the association between structural stigmas and body image is not understood. Using a linear regression approach, we examined how U.

Yeast fungi of the genus spp. can colonize the gastrointestinal tract in humans. In recent decades, the pathogenic role of has been increasingly acknowledged especially in the setting of neutropenic patients with hematological malignancies.

The Drive for Muscularity Scale (DMS) is a commonly used measure used to assess the pursuit of muscularity. However, the factor structure of this measure has yet to be confirmed in a sample of sexual minority women. Moreover, the invariance of this measure across gender has also yet to be explored.

Lymphatic filariasis (LF) is a mosquito-transmitted parasitic disease that is a leading cause of disability globally. The island of Hispaniola, which the Dominican Republic shares with Haiti, accounts for approximately 90% of LF cases in the Americas region. In 1998, the Dominican Ministry of Public Health created the Program to Eliminate Lymphatic Filariasis (PELF) with the goal of eliminating LF transmission by 2020.

This study examined the prevalence and risk factors of prediabetes and type 2 diabetes among residents of agricultural settlement villages (bateyes) in the Dominican Republic. From March to April 2016, a cross-sectional, multi-stage cluster survey was conducted across the country's three agricultural regions (southwest, east, and north). At selected households, an adult completed a questionnaire to assess demographics, diabetes knowledge, and care, and two household residents of any age provided finger-prick blood samples that were analyzed for hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c).

Eating disorders are serious mental illnesses associated with high mortality rates and health complications. Prior research has found increased rates of eating pathology in sexual minority (SM; e.g.

Objective: The present study aimed to investigate the factor structure of the Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire (EDE-Q) in a large sample of cisgender sexual minority men and women, and subsequently, to evaluate measurement invariance by gender.

Method: The sample consisted of 962 sexual minority adult men (n = 479) and women (n = 483) who completed online self-report surveys. Confirmatory factor analysis was conducted using two previously supported factor structures (Friborg et al.

Prior research has established that sexual minority (SM) individuals are more likely to experience disordered body image behaviors and concerns than heterosexual individuals. This increased risk may be explained by minority stress theory - that SM individuals are subject to SM-specific stressors, leading to health disparities - but this has not yet been fully examined. Furthermore, this theory states that SM community involvement may mitigate negative outcomes.

This study assessed the occurrence of probable eating disorders (EDs), ED symptoms, probable body dysmorphic disorder (BDD), BDD symptoms, drive for muscularity, and appearance and performance enhancement drug (APED) misuse, in an ethnically/racially diverse sample of 962 cisgender sexual minority (SM) individuals in the United States, aged 18-30 years old. The overall occurrence of probable ED, probable BDD, and APED misuse in the current sample was 32.7 %, 50.

Sexual minority adults report heightened body image disturbances, and may be more likely to meet criteria for body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) than their heterosexual counterparts. Given the poor outcomes associated with BDD, it is important to validate measures assessing dysmorphic symptoms among this at-risk group. The Dysmorphic Concern Questionnaire (DCQ) is a seven-item self-report measure intended to assess dysmorphic symptoms.

Latino sexual minority men (SMM) have high HIV incidence rates but report low pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) use. Medical mistrust predicts lower medical care use and could contribute to decreased PrEP engagement. This study examines how medical mistrust relates to the PrEP cascade among 151 Latino SMM aged 18-29.

Background: Discrimination is a major driver of health disparities among minority groups and can impede the reach of public health programs. In the Dominican Republic, residents of bateyes, or agricultural 'company towns,' often face barriers to health care. This study examined the extent of perceived discrimination among batey populations and places the findings within the context of disease elimination efforts.

Purpose: Various disparities exist in HIV transmission among men who have sex with men (MSM). Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) has been shown to decrease the acquisition of HIV, but there is variation in uptake within the MSM population. We aim to characterise PrEP use and correlates of self-reported PrEP use in a large national sample of urban MSM in the USA.

The Sociocultural Attitudes Towards Appearance Questionnaire-4 Revised (SATAQ-4R) is a measure of internalization (or belief and acceptance) of muscular, thin/low body fat, and general attractiveness ideals; and of sociocultural pressures experienced from family, peers, media, and significant others to achieve the ideal body. The current study examined the psychometric properties of the SATAQ-4R scores in a sample of sexual minority (non-heterosexual) men and women. Confirmatory factor analysis was employed to examine the factor structure in men (n = 479) and women (n = 482).

Background: The island of Hispaniola, shared by Haiti and the Dominican Republic (DR), is the only remaining malaria-endemic island in the Caribbean and accounts for 95% of the lymphatic filariasis (LF) burden in the Americas. Both countries aim to eliminate the diseases by 2020. Migration from Haiti, where both diseases are more prevalent, may promote transmission in the DR.

We designed, fabricated and characterized parallel-plate capacitor lumped-element kinetic inductance detectors (LEKIDs) to operate at near-infrared and optical wavelengths (0.3 -1 μm). The widely used interdigitated capacitor is replaced by a parallel-plate capacitor which, for a given resonance frequency, has a larger capacitance value within a much smaller space allowing to strongly reduce the size of the pixels.

Predicting which renal allografts will fail and the likely cause of failure is important in clinical trial design to either enrich patient populations to be or as surrogate efficacy endpoints for trials aimed at improving long-term graft survival. This study tests our previous Birmingham-Mayo model (termed the BirMay Predictor) developed in a low-risk kidney transplant population in order to predict the outcome of patients with donor specific alloantibody (DSA) at the time of transplantation and identify new factors to improve graft loss prediction in DSA+ patients. We wanted define ways to enrich the population for future therapeutic intervention trials.

Background: While progress has been made in the elimination of lymphatic filariasis, challenges that call for innovative approaches remain. Program challenges are increasingly observed in 'hard-to-reach' populations: urban dwellers, migrant populations, those living in insecurity, children who are out of school and areas where infrastructure is weak and education levels are low. 'Business-as-usual' approaches are unlikely to work.

Background: Latino sexual minority men (SMM) may be a group disproportionately at risk for substance use than heterosexual Latino men and non-Latino SMM. As religiosity may be a culturally relevant factor, the current study aimed to explore the association of three subcomponents of religiosity: organizational religious activity (ORA; i.e.

Hispaniola, the Caribbean island that includes the countries of Haiti and the Dominican Republic (DR), accounts for 90% of lymphatic filariasis (LF) in the Americas. Both countries have committed to LF elimination by 2020. In the DR, LF occurs mainly in , or company towns that historically hosted migrant laborers from Haiti.

The current study was designed to test the efficacy of an appearance-based facial morphing program to reduce intentional UV exposure among individuals at risk for skin cancer. A three-arm randomized controlled trial was employed (N = 219) comparing facial morphing + health information to: (1) mindfulness + health information; and (2) health information only. Participants were young adults with a history of recent intentional tanning and future intentions to tan.
