The complex (BCC) is a group of Gram-negative bacteria that cause opportunistic infections, most notably in people with cystic fibrosis (CF), and have been associated with outbreaks caused by contaminated medical products. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) is often used to guide treatment for BCC infections, perhaps most importantly in people with CF who are being considered for lung transplant. However, recent studies have highlighted problems with AST methods.

Unlabelled: Piperacillin-tazobactam (TZP) is a commonly used broad-spectrum agent. OXA-1 β-lactamases drive global Enterobacterales TZP resistance and raise MICs to the clinical breakpoints (8/4-16/4 µg/mL), making susceptibility testing challenging. Two TZP disks are used globally.

Introduction: Despite increasing evidence that Environmental Health Monitoring (EHM) is an effective method to perform rodent colony health surveillance, promotes the 3Rs as a Replacement, is comparable or reduces cost, and demonstrates labor benefits, many research institutions continue to use live Soiled Bedding Sentinels (SBS). Some veterinarians and others responsible for rodent colony health monitoring remain cautious of the evidence supporting this new technology. Therefore, our objective was to perform a formal systematic review to identify, summarize, and evaluate the research on the efficacy of EHM as compared to SBS.

Article Synopsis
  • Obesity is linked to a disrupted gut microbiome due to high-fat diets, causing conditions like insulin resistance and NASH.
  • In a study with mice, those on high-fat diets showed significant health issues, while treatment with Broncho-Vaxom® (OM-85) prevented obesity and improved gut health.
  • The findings suggest that immune modulators like OM-85 can positively impact metabolism and gut microbiome composition, indicating potential for new obesity therapies.

Checkpoint inhibitors targeting programmed cell death protein 1 (PD-1)/programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) have revolutionized cancer therapy across many indications including urothelial carcinoma (UC). Because many patients do not benefit, a better understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying response and resistance is needed to improve outcomes. We profiled tumors from 2,803 UC patients from four late-stage randomized clinical trials evaluating the PD-L1 inhibitor atezolizumab by RNA sequencing (RNA-seq), a targeted DNA panel, immunohistochemistry, and digital pathology.

Although frequently relegated to the periphery in conversations about gender-based violence prevention, the disabling impacts of traumatised subjectivity both affect survivors' abilities to fully participate in sex and contribute to survivors being more than twice as likely to be sexually (re)victimised compared to peers without trauma histories. In this paper, we seek to crip and queer approaches to gender-based violence prevention, particularly consent education, by learning from 2SLGBTQ+ and disabled trauma survivors' affective experiences of queer, crip sexual joy and the radically messy ways in which they establish their own care networks for deeply pleasurable sex through the principles of disability justice. Refusing pathologising understandings of survivors as those who need to be cured, we highlight traumatised subjectivity as emblematic of the ambiguity and ambivalence inherent in sex as well as the possibilities for caring, consensual sex that moves beyond the concept of consent employed in colonial, neoliberal capitalist societies' binary (Yes/No) consent laws.

Alveolar echinococcosis (AE) is a severe disease caused by the infection with the larval stage of Echinococcus multilocularis, the metacestode. As there is no actual curative drug therapy, recommendations to manage AE patients are based on radical surgery and prophylactic administration of albendazole or mebendazole during 2 years to prevent relapses. There is an urgent need for new therapeutic strategies for the management of AE, as the drugs in use are only parasitostatic, and can induce toxicity.

Background: Assessing urinary symptoms poses a complex challenge for primary care practitioners. In evaluating urological function, our approach involves constructing an urological age through the analysis of laboratory parameters and indicators of the urinary system.

Methods: Based on the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), urological laboratory tests and age-related symptoms were included in the development of urological age (UA) and urological age acceleration (UAA) through the Klemera Doubal method.

Background: Epilepsy surgery is an underutilized resource for children with drug-resistant epilepsy. Palliative and definitive surgical options can reduce seizure burden and improve quality of life. Palliative epilepsy surgery is often seen as a "last resort" compared to definitive surgical options.

Introduction: Violence within families is a complex problem which significantly impacts health and wellbeing. Despite the ubiquitous call for integrated family violence service delivery, integrated approaches vary significantly and challenges to implementation remain. This scoping review explored how integrated approaches to family violence service delivery are conceptualised within international and Aotearoa New Zealand literature.

infection in biomedical research is synonymous with skin hyperkeratosis of athymic nude mice. This clinical sign can be obvious and is the namesake for 'scaly skin disease.' Other clinical signs that accompany scaly skin, including early presentation, duration, and rate of resolution, are less well known.

Introduction: Intracranial hemorrhage (ICH), a serious complication in persons with hemophilia A (PWHA), causes high rates of mortality and morbidity. Identified ICH risk factors from patient data spanning 1998-2008 require reassessment in light of changes in the current treatment landscape.

Aim And Methods: PWHA identified in the ATHNdataset were evaluated retrospectively to assess incidence of ICH and determine the association between ICH risk and key characteristics using time-to-event analyses (Cox proportional-hazards models, survival curves, and sensitivity analyses).

Carbapenem resistance due to metallo-β-lactamases (MBLs) such as the Verona integron-encoded metallo-β-lactamase (VIM) is particularly problematic due to the limited treatment options. We describe a case series of bacterial infections in a tertiary care hospital due to multi-species acquisition of a VIM gene along with our experience using novel β-lactam antibiotics and antibiotic combinations to treat these infections. Four patients were treated with the combination of ceftazidime-avibactam and aztreonam, with no resistance to the combination detected.

The urinary bladder harbors a community of microbes termed the urobiome, which remains understudied. In this study, we present the urobiome of healthy infant males from samples collected by transurethral catheterization. Using a combination of enhanced culture and amplicon sequencing, we identify several common bacterial genera that can be further investigated for their effects on urinary health across the lifespan.

Article Synopsis
  • Scientists have recently added new types of bacteria to a special family that helps identify them in blood tests.
  • When doctors find these bacteria in blood cultures, it's hard to know how dangerous they really are.
  • The study shows that these bacteria are usually not very harmful, so if they're found just once in a test, doctors don't need to do a lot of extra tests.
