Congenital bronchogenic cysts of the lung and mediastinum develop from the ventral foregut during embryogenesis. These cysts are often incidental radiologic findings in adults, but patients can be seen with symptoms of chest pain, cough, dyspnea, or any combination of these. Acute presentations are unusual and have rarely been reported.

We have developed a new method based on the continuity equation using a Doppler catheter for the assessment of stenosis severity in the coronary circulation by means of quantitative velocity measurements obtained by complex spectral analysis of the Doppler signal. With this system we have been able to detect a high-velocity stenosis jet in a canine model of coronary stenosis of known cross-sectional area.

The "hugging balloon" technique, in which two dilatation catheter balloons are simultaneously inflated side-by-side, has been previously described for lesions in large saphenous vein grafts using the double guiding catheter (and dual entry site) technique. With the development of large lumen guiding catheters and lower profile dilatation catheters, we report the initial use of the hugging balloon technique via a single guiding catheter in oversized native coronary arteries.

In this study, estradiol (E2) and testosterone (T) levels were evaluated in healthy firefighters, patients with myocardial infarction acutely and during their convalescence, patients with no evidence of occlusive coronary artery disease on arteriography, and patients with chronic angina pectoris in whom there was at least one vessel that indicated 50% occlusive coronary artery disease. Although T levels were similar in all groups, E2 levels were substantially higher in patients with myocardial infarction and in patients with chronic angina pectoris.

Greater than 50% occlusive coronary artery disease was more prevalent in patients with either a high total cholesterol level, triglyceride level, or total cholesterol/HDL ratio, or a low HDL cholesterol level. Closer analysis of the extent of occlusive coronary artery disease indicated that the HDL cholesterol level was a better predictor of coronary artery disease than total cholesterol or triglyceride levels.
