Colorectal cancer is one of the most prevalent forms of cancer globally. The most common routine diagnostic methods are the examination of the interior of the colon during colonoscopy or sigmoidoscopy, which frequently includes the removal of a biopsy sample. Optical methods, such as Raman spectroscopy (RS) and optical coherence tomography (OCT), can help to improve diagnostics and reduce the number of unnecessary biopsies.

Background: Prophylactic mesh placement when creating a permanent colostomy was recommended by the 2017 European Hernia Society guidelines on the prevention and treatment of parastomal hernias (GPTPH2017). The extent of this recommendation is under debate based on the long-term data from clinical trials. Our aim was to conduct a survey of surgeons revealing perspectives and concerns regarding GPTPH2017 and to discuss their concerns.

Despite powerful DNA repair systems, oxidative damage/modification to DNA is an inevitable side effect of metabolism, ionizing radiation, lifestyle habits, inflammatory pathologies such as type-2 diabetes or metabolic syndrome, cancer and natural aging. One of the most common oxidative DNA modifications is 8-OHdG (8‑hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine), which is the most widely used marker in research and clinical diagnostics. 8-OHdG is easily and specifically detectable in various samples such as urine, plasma, cells and tissues via a large variety of methods like ELISA, HPLC, chromatographic methods, and immunochemistry.

Article Synopsis
  • Clinical cancer registries aim to provide accurate data analysis and identify ways to enhance care in oncology, focusing on distinct cancer types.
  • A study of the Clinical Epidemiological Cancer Registry Brandenburg-Berlin from 2000 to 2018 revealed that squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) was more prevalent than adenocarcinoma (EAC), although EAC cases are rising, especially among men.
  • Treatment primarily relied on chemotherapy and radiotherapy, with surgery rates at 19% for ESCC and 42% for EAC, raising concerns about the low surgical intervention despite the quality being comparable to international standards.

Background: Studies have shown that surgical treatment of colorectal carcinomas in certified centers leads to improved outcomes. However, there were considerable fluctuations in outcome parameters. It has not yet been examined whether this variability is due to continuous differences between hospitals or variability within a hospital over time.

Purpose: Endoluminal vacuum sponge therapy has dramatically improved the treatment of anastomotic leaks in esophageal surgery. However, the blind insertion of vacuum sponge kits like Eso-Sponge® via an overtube and a pusher can be technically difficult.

Methods: We therefore insert our sponges under direct visual control by a nonstandard "piggyback" technique that was initially developed for the self-made sponge systems preceding these commercially available kits.

Purpose: The treatment paradigm for locally advanced rectal cancer (LARC) is shifting toward the total neoadjuvant therapy (TNT) concept, which administered systemic chemotherapy in the neoadjuvant setting, either before or after chemoradiotherapy (CRT) or short-course radiotherapy (SCRT). First results have shown higher pathologic complete response (pCR) rates and a favorable impact on disease-free survival (DFS). Our study aimed to evaluate the current clinical practice and expert opinion regarding TNT for locally advanced rectal cancer across DKG (German Cancer Society)-certified colorectal cancer centers.
