The specific antibodies prepared against two purified ribosomal proteins (19 and 24) and total 66-S ribosomal proteins have been utilized to measure free ribosomal proteins in Rhodopseudomonas palustris. The free ribosomal protein pool (66 S) amounts to 1-2% of the total soluble proteins of R. palustris.

The permeability of bovine articular cartilage was measured in an apparatus designed to permit this measurement while the fluid pressure gradient across the cartilage and the axial compressive strain applied to the cartilage were varied independently. For all of the pressure gradients tested the permeability of the cartilage decreased as the compressive strain increased. From previous work, it was postulated that joint lubrication is accomplished first by fluid exudation into the joint space.

The addition of purified mammalian phosphofructokinase to homogenates of schistosoma mansoni increased the rate of lactic acid production from glucose and reversed the inhibition of glycolysis produced by low concentrations of trivalent organic antimonials. Neither mammalian phosphofructokinase nor trivalent antimonials affected the rate of lactic acid production from fructose-1:6-diphosphate (HDP) by schistosome homogenates. Accordingly, in the schistosome, the rate of glycolysis of glucose is determined by the activity of phosphofructokinase.
