The measurement of the fuel mixture remains a very difficult task in thermonuclear plasmas, where the hydrogen isotopes are fully stripped and do not emit line radiation. On the other hand, direct determination of the ion species mix will be essential in the reactor to keep the mixture close to 50/50 and maximize the fusion output. Measurement, analysis, and modeling of respiration rate (RR) of fresh produce are fundamental for the engineering design of MAP. This study investigates the effect of type of cutting (sliced in circular shape, batons in rectangular shape, and shredded into thin strips) on the respiration rate of carrots at different temperatures (4, 8, 12, 16, and 20 degrees C) with ambient atmosphere. The higher respiration rates were found for shredded carrots and the lowest for whole carrots at all the temperatures tested.

Ovokinin (FRADHPFL) was absorbed intact through the Caco-2 cell epithelium, although it was also susceptible to the action of brush-border aminopeptidases that yielded shorter fragments prior to their transport. The tripeptide YPI was resistant to cellular peptidases and transported through the monolayer, what suggests that the reduction in systemic blood pressure caused by this peptide may be mediated by effects at tissue level.

The sequences YRGGLEPINF and ESIINF produced an acute blood-pressure-lowering effect in spontaneously hypertensive rats upon a single oral administration. Our results suggest that the antihypertensive action could be attributed to a vascular-relaxing mechanism that would occur in vivo independently of angiotensin I-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibition, because neither these peptides nor their main digestion fragments, except for the dipeptide YR, acted as ACE inhibitors in vitro.

We have investigated the relationship between kinetic expression of CD45 on acinar cells during acute pancreatitis (AP) and the ability of these cells to produce tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) through mechanisms sensitive to the cellular redox state. Ion implantation at 25 and 100 keV has been used as a tool for the modification of the surface properties of two biomedical polymers. The modulation induced by the different energy dispersion mechanisms of Ar and He have allowed satisfactory modifications for both the activation of the surfaces of chemically functional polycaprolactone (PCL) and the stabilization of anti-fouling poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG). In both cases the implantations have been performed at doses of 10(14) cm(-2) by taking into account the effect of different current densities, which are shown to distinctly influence the fragmentation-crosslinking of the target polymers.

For analysis of some brainstem nuclei and regions, CR distribution was compared with that of complementary markers (choline acetyltransferase, glutamic acid decarboxylase, tyrosine hydroxylase, neuropeptide Y). The results reveal that CR is a marker of various neuronal populations distributed throughout the brainstem, including numerous cells in the optic tectum, torus semicircularis, secondary gustatory nucleus, reticular formation, somatomotor column, gustatory lobes, octavolateral area, and inferior olive, as well as of characteristic tracts of fibers and neuropil.
