Objectives: High background parenchymal enhancement (BPE) levels and asymmetric distribution could cause diagnostic uncertainty due to morphological similarity to breast cancer, especially invasive lobular carcinoma (ILC). We investigated BPE in ILC patients, its association with the tumor hormonal profile, and the effect of endocrine treatment (ET).
Methods: The analysis included all MRI examinations performed at our institution between 2010 and 2019 for ILC-diagnosed patients.
Objective: The need for personalization of the reference values of thyroid function tests has been previously suggested. We aimed at determining TSH reference values in a large cohort of children according to age, sex, BMI, and ethnicity.
Design: A population-based cohort study.
Background: The potential for dietary microalgae to enrich eggs of laying hens with ω-3 (n-3) fatty acids, and the mechanisms involved, are unclear.
Objectives: The aim of this study was to determine the effects and molecular regulation of a defatted Nannochloropsis oceanica microalgae (DNOM) biomass on the enrichment of the eggs and tissues of laying hens with ω-3 fatty acids.
Methods: Fifty Shaver-White Leghorn hens (46 wk of age, body weight: 1.
The purpose of this study was to analyse the association between free beta hCG (fβhCG) increased levels and pregnancy complications (PC), foetal growth restriction (FGR) and preeclampsia (PE). This connection was evaluated in two stages (i) investigating the association between those PC with first trimester fβhCG and second trimester intact hCG (ihCG), and (ii) studying the association between these two analytes in the same pregnancy. This was a retrospective study in two settings: medical centre that provided data on fβhCG and ihCG levels in pregnancies with FGR and PE, and central laboratory that provided fβhCG and ihCG levels that were compared in the same pregnancy.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFThe occurrence of antibiotic-resistant bacterial pathogens is on the rise because antibiotics exert selection pressure that kills only the antibiotic-sensitive pathogens. Sanitation and cleansing of hospital surfaces and the skin of medical personnel do not counteract this selective pressure, but rather indiscriminately reduce total pathogens on treated surfaces. Here, we discuss two recently introduced genetic strategies, based on temperate bacteriophages as DNA-delivery vehicles, that aim to sensitize bacteria to antibiotics and selectively kill the antibiotic-resistant ones.

Methods: Women who had a MSAFP test followed by amniocentesis were divided into two groups: those who had PC comprised the study group and those who had an uneventful pregnancy served as the control group.

The increasing threat of pathogen resistance to antibiotics requires the development of novel antimicrobial strategies. Here we present a proof of concept for a genetic strategy that aims to sensitize bacteria to antibiotics and selectively kill antibiotic-resistant bacteria. We use temperate phages to deliver a functional clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR)-CRISPR-associated (Cas) system into the genome of antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFCRISPR-Cas (clustered, regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats coupled with CRISPR-associated proteins) is a bacterial immunity system that protects against invading phages or plasmids. In the process of CRISPR adaptation, short pieces of DNA ('spacers') are acquired from foreign elements and integrated into the CRISPR array. So far, it has remained a mystery how spacers are preferentially acquired from the foreign DNA while the self chromosome is avoided.

Thirty-two, 14-month-old, male and female rainbow trout were sampled for growth, carcass yield, fillet composition, and gene expression of liver, white muscle, and visceral adipose tissue. Growth parameters, including gonadosomatic index, were not affected by sex.

Today's arsenal of antibiotics is ineffective against some emerging strains of antibiotic-resistant pathogens. Novel inhibitors of bacterial growth therefore need to be found. The target of such bacterial-growth inhibitors must be identified, and one way to achieve this is by locating mutations that suppress their inhibitory effect.

In many cultured fish species, such as salmonids, gonadal development occurs at the expense of stored energy and nutrients, including lipids. However, mechanisms regulating nutrient repartitioning during sexual maturation are not well understood. This study compared sexually maturing diploid (2N) and sterile triploid (3N) female rainbow trout to investigate effects of sexual maturation on expression of 35 genes involved in fatty acid metabolism, including genes within fatty acid synthesis, β-oxidation, and cofactors of the mTOR and PPAR signaling pathways, in liver, white muscle, and visceral adipose tissue.

Readthrough of in-frame PTCs enables synthesis of full-length functional proteins. However, extended variability in the response to readthrough treatment is found among patients, which correlates with the level of nonsense transcripts.

Thermal denaturation and viscoelastic properties of white muscle from diploid (2N; fertile) and triploid (3N; sterile) female rainbow trout were investigated at 6 age endpoints from July 2008 through spawning in March 2009. Differential scanning calorimetry showed, in March, that the actin denaturation temperature (T(max, actin)) of 2N females was higher than that observed in 3N females (78.

We identified 26 women (including ours) who had been pregnant with well-documented characteristics of type IV Ehlers-Danlos syndrome in the literature. These 26 women had 50 pregnancies.

The efficacy and safety of labor induction using an intrauterine balloon catheter in twin pregnancies has been evaluated. During the study period (1992-1997), labor was induced at 36-42 weeks in 17 twin gestations. Labor induction was indicated for preeclampsia (n = 10), birth weight discordance (n = 3), suspected fetal distress (n = 2) and postdates (n = 2).

Nevertheless, delayed diagnosis in some cardiac malformations still remains despite detailed echocardiographic examination. The present study was conducted to evaluate the evolution of fetal cardiac anomalies and assess their development in utero.

The objectives of this study were to analyze the decay constant (tau) of the Doppler flow waveform in ovarian tumors; to determine if differences in this constant can discriminate between malignant and benign ovarian tumors; and to compare the decay constant to the known resistive index (RI), in order to determine its potential prognostic application. Patients with ovarian masses (46) were evaluated in a retrospective study; 13 had malignant tumors, 7 showed tumors with low malignant potential (LMP), 11 had benign masses, 4 had secondary ovarian metastases and 11 had functional ovarian masses. Doppler flow waves measured in the ovary before operation were analyzed from archival videotapes.
