Article Synopsis
  • Fluorescent molecules are essential in biomedicine for visualizing biological processes with high sensitivity and specificity, but customizing them for live cell imaging is challenging due to complex structural and photophysical interactions.
  • This study used multivariate linear free-energy relationships (mLFER) to optimize a new platform of fluorescent dyes called BASHY, which are derived from boronic acid and salicylidenehydrazone.
  • The research resulted in a predictive model for a novel BASHY dye, which demonstrated effective stability in live cell experiments and was tested successfully in zebrafish larvae.

Spring viremia of carp virus (SVCV) has a broad fish host spectrum and is responsible for a disease that generally affects juvenile fishes with a mortality rate of up to 90%. In the absence of treatments or vaccines against SVCV, the search for prophylactic or therapeutic solutions is thus relevant, particularly to identify solutions compatible with mass vaccination. In addition to being a threat to aquaculture and ecosystems, SVCV is a unique pathogen to study virus-host interactions in the zebrafish model.

Nephronophthisis (NPH) is an autosomal recessive tubulointerstitial nephropathy belonging to the ciliopathy disorders and known as the most common cause of hereditary end-stage renal disease in children. Yet, no curative treatment is available. The major gene, NPHP1, encodes a protein playing key functions at the primary cilium and cellular junctions.
