Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is a progressive dilatation of the aorta that can lead to aortic rupture. The pathophysiology of the disease is not well characterized but is known to be caused by the general breakdown of the extracellular matrix within the aortic wall. In this comprehensive literature review, all current research on proteins that have been investigated for their potential prognostic capabilities in patients with AAA was included.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFBackground: eNOS (endothelial nitric oxide synthase) is an endothelial cell (EC)-specific gene predominantly expressed in medium- to large-sized arteries where ECs experience atheroprotective laminar flow with high shear stress. Disturbed flow with lower average shear stress decreases eNOS transcription, which leads to the development of atherosclerosis, especially at bifurcations and curvatures of arteries. This prototypic arterial EC gene contains 2 distinct flow-responsive cis-DNA elements in the promoter, the shear stress response element (SSRE) and the KLF (Krüppel-like factor) element.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFBackground: As the healthcare system faced an acute shortage of personal protective equipment (PPE) during the COVID-19 pandemic, the use of 3D printing technologies became an innovative method of increasing production capacity to meet this acute need. Due to the emergence of a large number of 3D printed face shield designs and community-led PPE printing initiatives, this case study examines the methods and design best optimized for community printers who may not have the resources or experience to conduct such a thorough analysis.
Case Presentation: We present the optimization of the production of 3D printed face shields by community 3D printers, as part of an initiative aimed at producing PPE for healthcare workers.
