The present study explores the microbial community associated with the industrially important red seaweed Gracilaria dura to determine the diversity and biotechnological potential through culture and metagenomics approaches. In the first part of the investigation, we isolated and characterized 75 bacterial morphotypes, with varied colony characteristics and metabolic diversity from the wild seaweed. The eastern Arabian Sea (EAS) is known for its unique oceanographic features such as the seasonal monsoonal winds, upwelling of nutrient-rich waters and a significant increase in primary productivity during the monsoon season. In this study, we utilised the shotgun metagenomics approach to determine the seasonal variations in bacterial taxonomic and functional profiles during the non-monsoon and monsoon seasons in the EAS. Significant seasonal variations in the bacterial community structure were observed at the phylum and genera levels.

Aims: To characterize the polysaccharide hydrolyzing potential of macroalgae-associated bacteria (MABs) for the enzymatic production of oligosaccharides and determining their prebiotic potential.

Mixed phenotype acute leukaemia (MPAL) is a diverse group of leukemia of ambiguous lineage diagnosed when blasts in peripheral blood and/or bone marrow have antigens of more than one lineage or a mosaic of blasts belonging to more than one lineage. We have engineered streptavidin-labeled fluorescent gold nanoclusters to develop a gold nanocluster immunoassay (GNCIA) for the early and sensitive detection of HIV infection. We performed computational simulations on the mechanism of interaction between the nanoclusters and the streptavidin protein via in silico studies and showed that gold nanoclusters enhance the binding to the protein, by enhancing interaction between the Au atoms and the specific active site residues, compared to other metal nanoclusters. We also evaluated the role of glutathione conjugation in binding to gold nanoclusters with streptavidin.
