Effectiveness of early administration of a single dose of steroids and escin after loss of signal on electromyographic signal recovery during neuromonitored thyroidectomy.

Background: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of a single early administration of dexamethasone and escin after loss of signal (LOS) during a neuromonitored total thyroidectomy.

Methods: A retrospective analysis of results concerning consecutive patients undergoing total thyroidectomy was performed. Patients included in the study were divided into two groups: Group 1 for which a "wait and see" strategy was used; Group 2, receiving dexamethasone and escin immediately after LOS detection.

Resection of a giant mediastinal leiomyosarcoma.

Primary leiomyosarcomas of the lung are tumors. We report a case of 49-year old female with history of cough, breathless at rest, right sided chest pain. Chest CT showed a huge (16 cm) mediastinal mass located on the right mediastinum encasing the right main pulmonary artery and infiltrating the main right bronchus and pericardium.

Ultrasound-guided port-a-cath positioning with the new one-shoot technique: thoracic complications.

Objectives: Port-a-cath catheterization is often required for those patients who need long-term therapies (malnutrition, neoplasm, renal failure, other severe diseases). The use of ports for a wide range of indications is not exempt from complications. Ultrasound-guided central venous catheterization (CVC) is a safe and fast technique for the introduction of the catheter inside a central vein.

Kinesio Taping Application in Dysphonic Singers.

Introduction: Kinesio Taping (KT) application in speech therapy has been studied in a few works about dysphonia, facial nerve palsy, sialorrhea, atypical deglutition, postsurgical recovery after thyroidectomy and laryngectomy. The aim of this study was the evaluation of the possible role of KT in supporting speech therapy in singers complaining of dysphonia using singing voice handicap index (SVHI), fundamental frequency (F0), shimmer, jitter and harmonic to noise ratio (mean H/N).

Materials And Methods: We enrolled consecutive singers and singing students complaining of dysphonia and voice problems.

Non-functioning parathyroid cystic tumour: malignant or not? Report of a case.

Parathyroid carcinoma (PC) is a very rare endocrine tumour, usually characterized by symptoms such as a neck mass, dysphonia, severe hypercalcemia exceeding 140 mg/L and elevated serum parathyroid hormone levels, even more than 5 times the upper limit of normal. Non-functioning parathyroid cancer is extremely rare and, in this case, its pre-operative diagnosis is often difficult. A 54-year old female patient, referring dysphagia and dysphonia, underwent neck ultrasound and neck CT.

Self-esteem evaluation in children and adolescents suffering from ADHD.

Background: Several recent studies investigated the relationship between self-esteem and ADHD, however, the results are still controversial. In the present study we analyze the characteristics of self-esteem in a sample of children and adolescents suffering from ADHD, with a particular focus on the relationship between ADHD symptoms severity and treatment strategies.

Methods: A total of 85 patients with ADHD (44 drug-free and 41 drug-treated, 23 of which atomoxetine-treated and 18 Methylphenidate-treated) and 26 healthy controls were enrolled in the study in order to evaluate self-esteem using the Self-esteem Multidimensional Test (TMA).

Lower IQ is associated with decreased clinical response to atomoxetine in children and adolescents with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder.

Objectives: Atomoxetine is commonly used to treat attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children with a broad range of cognitive abilities. We examined the association between level of cognitive functioning as determined by IQ and clinical response during treatment with atomoxetine.
