Article Synopsis
  • Secondary bacterial infections (SBIs) are linked to worse hospital outcomes for COVID-19 patients, with prior treatment using proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) increasing the risk of these infections.
  • In a study of 1,087 hospitalized COVID-19 patients, 41% were on PPIs prior to admission, leading to higher rates of SBIs (18%) and secondary bacterial sepsis (SBS) (20%).
  • PPI treatment was associated with a significantly greater risk of developing SBIs and SBS, which in turn increased the likelihood of ICU admissions or in-hospital deaths, highlighting the need for cautious PPI use in these patients.

Statins and non-statin medications used for the management of dyslipidemia have been shown to possess antitumor properties. Since the use of these drugs has steadily increased over the past decades, more knowledge is required about their relationship with cancer. Lipid-lowering agents are heterogeneous compounds; therefore, it remains to be revealed whether anticancer potential is a class effect or related to them all.

Background: Periprosthetic joint infections (PJI) following joint arthroplasty are now the leading cause of reoperation and are associated with serious morbidity to the patient, often requiring several staged operations and a prolonged course of parenteral antibiotics. Prophylactic administration of intravenous antibiotics before skin incision is arguably the most important measure to prevent PJI; however, the dose effectiveness of cefazolin in target tissue is not well known. We aimed to identify parameters affecting local tissue concentration (LTC) of cefazolin.

The prothrombotic and proinflammatory properties of lipoprotein(a) (Lp(a)) have been hypothesized to play a role in the pathogenesis of severe COVID-19; however, the prognostic impact of Lp(a) on the clinical course of COVID-19 remains controversial. This study aimed to investigate whether Lp(a) may be associated with biomarkers of thrombo-inflammation and the occurrence of thrombotic events or adverse clinical outcomes in patients hospitalized for COVID-19. We consecutively enrolled a cohort of patients hospitalized for COVID-19 and collected blood samples for Lp(a) assessment at hospital admission.

Introduction: Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) is the main cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Dyslipidemia, in particular elevation of LDL-cholesterol levels (LDL-C), is one of the major cardiovascular risk factors and is characterized by high prevalence and independent unfavorable impact on cardiovascular prognosis; however, because of its asymptomatic course, it often remains undiagnosed. Strategies aimed at early identification of subjects with elevated LDL-C levels may allow early intervention, preventing ASCVD development.

Background: Chronic systemic inflammation reduces the bioavailability of circulating endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs). Indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase 1 (IDO1), a key enzyme of immune tolerance catalyzing the initial step of tryptophan degradation along the so-called l-kynurenine (l-kyn) pathway, that is induced by inflammatory stimuli and exerts anti-inflammatory effects. A specific relationship between IDO1 activity and circulating EPC numbers has not yet been investigated.

Statins may protect against adverse outcomes from Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) through their pleiotropic effects. Endothelial dysfunction seems to be implicated in the pathophysiology of COVID-19, and can be attenuated by statins. This study assessed the role of preadmission statin therapy and its interaction with endothelial function, measured using flow-mediated dilation (FMD) at hospital admission, in predicting in-hospital outcomes among patients with COVID-19 having high-to-very high cardiovascular (CV) risk.

Introduction: Influenza virus infection is associated with high morbidity and mortality, and so additional therapeutic strategies to reduce the burden for healthcare systems are needed. Statins, by virtue of their anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects, have been hypothesized as capable of influencing the host's response against the influenza virus. The aim of this meta-analysis was to assess the effect of ongoing statin treatment on susceptibility to influenza virus infection and on influenza-associated mortality.

Human mesenchymal stem cell (hMSC) and extracellular vesicle (EV) therapy is a promising treatment for discogenic low back pain (LBP). Although promising, major obstacles remain to be overcome. Cellular senescence reduces self-renewal and multipotent potentials, and the senescence-associated secretory phenotype creates an inflammatory environment negatively affecting tissue homeostasis.

Elevated low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) is unanimously recognized as a major modifiable risk factor related to the development of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). Consistent evidence confirms that reducing LDL-C is associated with reduction of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACEs), with benefits proportionally related to initial individual CV risk and absolute reduction of LDL-C levels. The recent European guidelines on cardiovascular prevention have proposed a revised approach in cardiovascular risk evaluation, taking into account a renewed consideration of the interaction between risk factors and possible confounding factors (e.

A complex dysregulation of lipid metabolism occurs in COVID-19, leading to reduced total cholesterol (TC), LDL-cholesterol (LDL-C), and HDL-cholesterol (HDL-C) levels, along with a derangement of thyroid function, leading to reduced thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels. This study aimed to explore the association between TSH levels during COVID-19 and the variation (Δ) of lipid profile parameters in the period preceding (from 1 month up to 1 year) hospital admission due to COVID-19. Clinical data of 324 patients (mean age 76 ± 15 years, 54% males) hospitalized due to COVID-19 between March 2020 and March 2022 were retrospectively analyzed.
