Recently, plasmonic copper sulfide (Cu2-xS) nanocrystals (NCs) have attracted much attention as materials for photothermal therapy (PTT). Previous reports have correlated photoinduced cell death to the photothermal heat mechanism of these NCs, and no evidence of their photodynamic properties has been reported yet. Herein we have prepared physiologically stable near-infrared (NIR) plasmonic copper sulfide NCs and analyzed their photothermal and photodynamic properties, including therapeutic potential in cultured melanoma cells and a murine melanoma model.

We present an approach for the synthesis of ternary copper indium sulfide (CIS) and quaternary copper indium zinc sulfide (CIZS) nanocrystals (NCs) by means of partial cation exchange with In(3+) and Zn(2+). The approach consists of a sequential three-step synthesis: first, binary Cu2S NCs were synthesized, followed by the homogeneous incorporation of In(3+) by an in situ partial cation-exchange reaction, leading to CIS NCs. In the last step, a second partial exchange was performed where Zn(2+) partially replaced the Cu(+) and In(3+) cations at the surface, creating a ZnS-rich shell with the preservation of the size and shape.

LiFePO4 has been intensively investigated as a cathode material in Li-ion batteries, as it can in principle enable the development of high power electrodes. LiFePO4, on the other hand, is inherently "plagued" by poor electronic and ionic conductivity. While the problems with low electron conductivity are partially solved by carbon coating and further by doping or by downsizing the active particles to nanoscale dimensions, poor ionic conductivity is still an issue.

We studied cation exchange reactions in colloidal Cu(2-x)Se nanocrystals (NCs) involving the replacement of Cu(+) cations with either Sn(2+) or Sn(4+) cations. This is a model system in several aspects: first, the +2 and +4 oxidation states for tin are relatively stable; in addition, the phase of the Cu(2-x)Se NCs remains cubic regardless of the degree of copper deficiency (that is, "x") in the NC lattice. Also, Sn(4+) ions are comparable in size to the Cu(+) ions, while Sn(2+) ones are much larger.

Core-shell CdSe/CdS nanocrystals are a very promising material for light emitting applications. Their solution-phase synthesis is based on surface-stabilizing ligands that make them soluble in organic solvents, like toluene or chloroform. However, solubility of these materials in water provides many advantages, such as additional process routes and easier handling.

Solution-processed inorganic and organic materials have been pursued for more than a decade as low-threshold, high-gain lasing media, motivated in large part by their tunable optoelectronic properties and ease of synthesis and processing. Although both have demonstrated stimulated emission and lasing, they have not yet approached the continuous-wave pumping regime. Two-dimensional CdSe colloidal nanosheets combine the advantage of solution synthesis with the optoelectronic properties of epitaxial two-dimensional quantum wells.

We report on the properties of the (0001) covellites surfaces, which we investigate by periodic slab density functional theory calculations. The absolute surface energies have been computed for all bulk terminations, showing that surfaces terminated by the flat CuS layer are associated with the lowest surface energy. Cleavage is predicted to occur across the [0001] interlayer Cu-S bond.

We report a highly reproducible route to synthesize iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) with control over size and shape and with size dispersions around 10%. By tuning the relative ratio of squalane to dibenzyl ether, which were used as solvents in the synthesis, the size of the particles could be varied from 14 to around 100 nm, while their shape evolved from cubic (for size ranges up to 35 nm) to truncated octahedra and octahedra (for sizes from 40 nm up to 100 nm). Fine tuning of the size within each of these ranges could be achieved by varying the heating ramp and the iron precursor to decanoic acid ratio.

We report the synthesis of alloyed quaternary and quinary nanocrystals based on copper chalcogenides, namely, copper zinc selenide-sulfide (CZSeS), copper tin selenide-sulfide (CTSeS), and copper zinc tin selenide-sulfide (CZTSeS) nanoplatelets (NPLs) (∼20 nm wide) with tunable chemical composition. Our synthesis scheme consisted of two facile steps: i.e.

Hollow and concave nanocrystals find applications in many fields, and their fabrication can follow different possible mechanisms. We report a new route to these nanostructures that exploits the oxidation of Cu(2-x)Se/Cu(2-x)S core/shell nanocrystals with various etchants. Even though the Cu(2-x)Se core is encased in a thick Cu(2-x)S shell, the initial effect of oxidation is the creation of a void in the core.

CdS nanocrystals (NCs) synthesized by colloidal chemistry methods have been intensively studied for various applications. However, little attention has been paid to the interaction between the oxygen molecules present in air and the NC surface, which has a strong influence on the electrical properties of NC films. Here, we discuss the effect of oxygen adsorption at the NC surface on the photoconductivity of CdS NC films that were treated by propyltrichlorosilane, which is known to replace the native ligands at the NC surface with chloride ions.

The progress of tomographic coherent diffractive imaging with hard X-rays at the ID10 beamline of the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility is presented. The performance of the instrument is demonstrated by imaging a cluster of Fe2P magnetic nanorods at 59 nm 3D resolution by phasing a diffraction volume measured at 8 keV photon energy. The result obtained shows progress in three-dimensional imaging of non-crystalline samples in air with hard X-rays.

In this Letter we report patterning of colloidal nanocrystal films that combines direct e-beam (electron beam) writing with cation exchange. The e-beam irradiation causes cross-linking of the ligand molecules present at the nanocrystal surface, and the cross-linked molecules act as a mask for further processing. Consequently, in the following step of cation exchange, which is performed by directly dipping the substrate in a solution containing the new cations, the regions that have not been exposed to the electron beam are chemically transformed, while the exposed ones remain unchanged.

Controlled assembly of single-crystal, colloidal maghemite nanoparticles is facilitated via a high-temperature polyol-based pathway. Structural characterization shows that size-tunable nanoclusters of 50 and 86 nm diameters (D), with high dispersibility in aqueous media, are composed of ∼13 nm (d) crystallographically oriented nanoparticles. The interaction effects are examined against the increasing volume fraction, φ, of the inorganic magnetic phase that goes from individual colloidal nanoparticles (φ = 0.

In phospho-olivine type structures with mixed cations (LiM1M2PO4), the octahedral M1 and M2 sites that dictate the degree of intersites order/disorder play a key role in determining their electrochemical redox potentials. In the case of LiFexMn1-xPO4, for example, in micrometer-sized particles synthesized via hydrothermal route, two separate redox centers corresponding to Fe(2+)/Fe(3+) (3.5 V vs Li/Li(+)) and Mn(2+)/Mn(3+) (4.

Nanoparticles with unconventional shapes may exhibit different types of assembly architectures that depend critically on the environmental conditions under which they are formed. Here, we demonstrate how the presence of polymer (polymethyl methacrylate, PMMA) molecules in a solution, in which CdSe(core)/CdS(pods) octapods are initially dispersed, affects the octapod-polymer organization upon solvent evaporation. We show that a fast drop-drying process can induce a remarkable two-dimensional (2D) self-assembly of octapods at the polymer/air interface.

We present a review on the emerging materials for novel plasmonic colloidal nanocrystals. We start by explaining the basic processes involved in surface plasmon resonances in nanoparticles and then discuss the classes of nanocrystals that to date are particularly promising for tunable plasmonics: non-stoichiometric copper chalcogenides, extrinsically doped metal oxides, oxygen-deficient metal oxides and conductive metal oxides. We additionally introduce other emerging types of plasmonic nanocrystals and finally we give an outlook on nanocrystals of materials that could potentially display interesting plasmonic properties.

We synthesize colloidal CdSe@CdS octapod nanocrystals decorated with Pt domains, resulting in a metal-semiconductor heterostructure. We devise a protocol to control the growth of Pt on the CdS surface, realizing both a selective tipping and a non-selective coverage. Ultrafast optical spectroscopy, particularly femtosecond transient absorption, is employed to correlate the dynamics of optical excitations with the nanocrystal morphology.

Whispering-gallery-mode resonators have been extensively used in conjunction with different materials for the development of a variety of photonic devices. Among the latter, hybrid structures, consisting of dielectric microspheres and colloidal core/shell semiconductor nanocrystals as gain media, have attracted interest for the development of microlasers and studies of cavity quantum electrodynamic effects. Here we demonstrate single-exciton, single-mode, spectrally tuned lasing from ensembles of optical antenna-designed, colloidal core/shell CdSe/CdS quantum rods deposited on silica microspheres.
