Resveratrol is a phytoestrogen that has many beneficial actions. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of resveratrol on the complete blood count (CBC) and the acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity of lymphocytes of ovariectomized rats experimentally demyelinated by ethidium bromide (EB). Forty adult female Wistar rats (60 days, 200-220 g) were divided randomly into five groups (n = 4) to evaluate the demyelination phase and five groups (n = 4) to evaluate the remyelination phase.

Single-step synthesis of layered double hydroxides ultrathin nanosheets.

A novel single-step approach was developed to prepare large-scale MgAl-LDHs ultrathin nanosheets. The key point of the successful realization was that we employed a high concentration of H(2)O(2). Oxygen molecules, derived from in situ decomposition of H(2)O(2), were speculated to be the decisive factor leading to complete separation of LDHs layers.

Fast-Scan DSC and its role in pharmaceutical physical form characterisation and selection.

Conventional rate Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) has been used for many years as a tool in the analysis of pharmaceutical materials. In recent years an extension of the technique to include fast heating and cooling rates has become more prevalent. Broadly termed Fast-Scan DSC, this review examines the current applications of this technique to the characterisation and selection of pharmaceutical materials.

Transradial approach in the catheterization laboratory: pros/cons and suggestions for successful implementation.

In the last decade the radial access use in the catheterization laboratory has sensibly grown up worldwide. From an initial sporadic use as alternative but challenging vascular approach, radial artery is today utilized by default for percutaneous procedures in many centers. The tangible interest in the transradial approach is also testified by increasing presence of specific sessions in the main interventional meetings and by continuous development of dedicated catheters and ancillary devices by manufacturers.

Myxoma virus induces apoptosis in cultured feline carcinoma cells.

There is growing interest in utilizing replicating oncolytic viruses as cancer therapeutics agents. The effectiveness of myxoma virus-induced oncolysis was evaluated in two feline cancer cell cultures. Although myxoma virus is a rabbit-specific pathogen, protein expression driven by myxoma virus and production of infectious viral particles were detected.

This essay argues that the diversity of the history of mathematics community in the United Kingdom has influenced the development of the subject and is a significant factor behind the different concerns often evident in work on the history of mathematics when compared with that of historians of science. The heterogeneous nature of the community, which includes many who are not specialist historians, and the limited opportunities for academic careers open to practitioners have had a profound effect on the discipline, leading to a focus on elite mathematics and great mathematicians. More recently, reflecting earlier developments in the history of science, an increased interest in the context and culture of the practice of mathematics has become evident.

Stent design, metal alloy composition, and strut thickness may influence late lumen loss and clinical outcomes after bare metal stent deployment; however, their impact on outcomes after drug-eluting stent deployment is unknown. Although the TAXUS Liberté and ION paclitaxel-eluting stents use similar polymer and drug, the ION stent incorporates a novel thin-strut platinum chromium metal alloy and cell design. We therefore compared patient-level data from 2,298 subjects enrolled into the TAXUS ATLAS (TAXUS Liberté) and PERSEUS (ION) clinical trials.

We review historical factors that led to the creation of the interdisciplinary field of infant mental health. The history of infant mental health is linked to transformations in scientific knowledge about infancy that emerged primarily in the 20th century, particularly with respect to social and emotional development. Contemporary challenges for the infant mental health field focus on research, practice, and policy issues that reflect these shifts and impact our understanding of the dynamic social, emotional, and cultural forces that shape early development.

Heart rate variability is related to training load variables in interval running exercises.

Overload principle of training states that training load (TL) must be sufficient to threaten the homeostasis of cells, tissues, organs and/or body. However, there is no "golden standard" for TL measurement. The aim of the present study was to investigate if post-exercise heart rate variability (HRV) could be used to evaluate TL of interval running exercises with different intensities and durations.

Systemic hypothermia to prevent radiocontrast nephropathy (from the COOL-RCN Randomized Trial).

Radiocontrast nephropathy (RCN) develops in a substantial proportion of patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) after invasive cardiology procedures and is strongly associated with subsequent mortality and adverse outcomes. We sought to determine whether systemic hypothermia is effective in preventing RCN in patients with CKD. Patients at risk for RCN (baseline estimated creatinine clearance 20 to 50 ml/min) undergoing cardiac catheterization with iodinated contrast ≥50 ml were randomized 1:1 to hydration (control arm) versus hydration plus establishment of systemic hypothermia (33°C to 34°C) before first contrast injection and for 3 hours after the procedure.

Aims: Small reference vessel diameter predicts adverse outcomes following coronary stenting. TAXUS Express and TAXUS Liberté paclitaxel-eluting stents (PES) reduce restenosis compared to bare metal stents (BMS) in small diameter vessels. TAXUS Element is a novel thin-strut, platinum chromium stent designed to enhance visibility, conformability, and drug delivery in small diameter vessels.

Furosemide in the treatment of phosgene induced acute lung injury.

Method: Using previously validated methods, 16 anaesthetised large white pigs were exposed to phosgene (target inhaled dose 0.3 mg kg(-1)), established on mechanical ventilation and randomised to treatment with either nebulised furosemide (4 ml of 10 mg x ml(-1) solution) or saline control. Treatments were given at 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 12, 16 and 20 hours post phosgene exposure; the animals were monitored to 24 hours following phosgene exposure.

Improved strut coverage and less late incomplete apposition with thin-strut TAXUS Liberté vs. TAXUS Express: the importance of stent platform design for drug-eluting stents.

Background: The objective of this intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) analysis was to evaluate the vascular response of the thin-strut TAXUS Liberté stent compared with the otherwise identical TAXUS Express stent.

Methods And Materials: The TAXUS ATLAS and TAXUS ATLAS Long Lesion studies are nonrandomized trials comparing the thin-strut TAXUS Liberté stent to historical TAXUS Express controls from the TAXUS IV and TAXUS V trials. A total of 377 patients enrolled in the two TAXUS ATLAS studies were randomly selected for the IVUS subset and compared to 314 TAXUS Express IVUS controls.

Exposure-response effects of inhaled sulfur mustard in a large porcine model: a 6-h study.

Context: Inhalation of sulfur mustard (HD) vapor can cause life-threatening lung injury for which there is no specific treatment. A reproducible, characterized in vivo model is required to investigate novel therapies targeting HD-induced lung injury.

Materials And Methods: Anesthetized, spontaneously breathing large white pigs (~50 kg) were exposed directly to the lung to HD vapor at 60, 100, or 150 µg/kg, or to air, for ~10 min, and monitored for 6 h.

Neutrophils are important in innate immunity and acute inflammatory responses. However, the regulation of their recruitment to sites of inflammation has not been well characterized. Here, we investigated the kinase PIP5K1C and showed that PIP5K1C deficiency impaired neutrophil recruitment because of an adhesion defect.

Hand ischemia resulting from a transradial intervention: successful management with radial artery angioplasty.

We describe a case of hand ischemia resulting from transradial catheterization. This was successfully treated with angioplasty of the radial artery occlusion, but stresses the importance of a preprocedure evaluation of the dual blood supply to the hand before transradial access.
