Preterm birth disrupts the natural progression of events in the parent-infant relationship and bestows many of the typical parent responsibilities to the clinical care team. In turn, the neonatal intensive care environment (NICU) introduces obstacles to parents that would not otherwise be encountered and forces parents to adapt to this artificial environment as they seek to bond with and care for their newborn. Facilitating parent presence at the bedside and incorporating them into the care of their preterm infant is critical for lessening the immediate burden to both the parent and offspring while also ensuring the best possible outcome for preterm infants.

We report the synthesis of near-infrared (IR)-emitting core/shell/shell quantum dots of CuInZnS/ZnSe/ZnS and their phase transfer to water. The intermediate ZnSe shell was added to inhibit the migration of ions from the standard ZnS shell into the emitting core, which often leads to a blue shift in the emission profile. By engineering the interface between the core and terminal shell layer, the optical properties can be controlled, and emission was maintained in the near-IR region, making the materials attractive for biological applications.

This study utilizes a controlled experimental design to investigate the influence of a virtual reality experience on empathy, compassion, moral reasoning, and moral foundations. With continued debate and mixed results from previous studies attempting to show relationships between virtual reality and empathy, this study takes advantage of the technology for its ability to provide a consistent, repeatable experience, broadening the scope of analysis beyond empathy. A systematic literature review identified the most widely used and validated moral psychology assessments for the constructs, and these assessments were administered before and after the virtual reality experience.

Modern radiotherapy delivers highly conformal dose distributions to irregularly shaped target volumes while sparing the surrounding normal tissue. Due to the complex planning and delivery techniques, dose verification and validation of the whole treatment workflow by end-to-end tests became much more important and polymer gel dosimeters are one of the few possibilities to capture the delivered dose distribution in 3D. The basic principles and formulations of gel dosimetry and its evaluation methods are described and the available studies validating device-specific geometrical parameters as well as the dose delivery by advanced radiotherapy techniques, such as 3D-CRT/IMRT and stereotactic radiosurgery treatments, the treatment of moving targets, online-adaptive magnetic resonance-guided radiotherapy as well as proton and ion beam treatments, are reviewed.

The R132H isocitrate dehydrogenase one (IDH1) mutation is a prognostic biomarker present in a subset of gliomas and is associated with heightened survival when paired with aggressive surgical resection. In this study, we establish proof-of-principle for rapid colorimetric detection of the IDH1-R132H mutation in tumor samples in under 1 hour without the need for a nucleic acid extraction. Colorimetric peptide nucleic acid loop-mediated isothermal amplification (CPNA-LAMP) utilizes 4 conventional LAMP primers, a blocking PNA probe complementary to the wild-type sequence, and a self-annealing loop primer complementary to the single nucleotide variant to only amplify the DNA sequence containing the mutation.
