Article Synopsis
  • - Persistent left superior vena cava (PLSVC) is a rare venous condition that can complicate medical procedures like central venous catheterization and pacemaker placement due to its atypical drainage patterns, which can sometimes lead to serious issues like hypoxia.
  • - A case study involving a 64-year-old male with multiple health issues and atrial fibrillation highlighted the challenges of managing PLSVC during a dual-chamber pacemaker implantation, where the patient experienced lead displacement post-procedure.
  • - PLSVC typically results from incomplete development of the left anterior cardinal vein and is often identified incidentally during procedures, emphasizing the need for careful navigation during cardiac interventions.

Periodic discharges (PDs) are pathologic patterns of epileptiform discharges repeating at regular intervals, commonly detected in the human electroencephalogram (EEG) signals in patients who are critically ill. The frequency and spatial extent of PDs are associated with the tendency of PDs to cause brain injury, existing automated algorithms do not quantify the frequency and spatial extent of PDs. The present study presents an algorithm for quantifying frequency and spatial extent of PDs.

It is well recognized that early experiences produce long-term impacts on health outcomes, yet many children are at risk of not achieving their full potential because of health and service disparities related largely to poverty and racism. Although many pediatric primary care (PPC) models address these needs, most are isolated, add-on efforts that struggle to be scalable and sustainable. We describe 3-2-1 IMPACT (Integrated Model for Parents and Children Together), an initiative to transform the model of PPC delivered within New York City Health + Hospitals, the largest public hospital system in the United States, to address the full range of child and family needs in early childhood.

Topological data analysis (TDA) is an emerging technique for biological signal processing. TDA leverages the invariant topological features of signals in a metric space for robust analysis of signals even in the presence of noise. In this paper, we leverage TDA on brain connectivity networks derived from electroencephalogram (EEG) signals to identify statistical differences between pediatric patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and pediatric patients without OSA.

Background: Tracheal airflow limitation is frequently reported in patients with goiter but is severely underestimated, and studies on how goiter and its treatment affect trachea are scarce. Moreover, the choice of the optimal treatment for individual patient with asymptomatic goiter is not straightforward. Therefore, in this study we aim to investigate the effect of goiter and subsequent thyroidectomy on tracheal anatomy and change in airflow in asymptomatic patient with goiter.

Pharmacological activation of nuclear factor erythroid 2 related factor 2 (NRF2) provides protection against several environmental diseases by inhibiting oxidative and inflammatory injury. Besides high in protein and minerals, leaves contain several bioactive compounds, predominantly isothiocyanate moringin and polyphenols, which are potent inducers of NRF2. Hence, leaves represent a valuable food source that could be developed as a functional food for targeting NRF2 signaling.
