Background: The National Quality Assurance Standards (NQAS) have been developed keeping in specific requirements for public health facilities as well global best practices. Standards are primarily meant for providers to assess their quality for improvement through predefined standards and to bring up their facilities for certification.

Objectives: To study the effect of National Accreditation Board for Hospitals (NABH)-recommended training on patient care standards based on NQAS guidelines.

Article Synopsis
  • Clinical biochemistry analyzers are crucial for disease diagnosis, but purchasing decisions often focus only on the initial costs, neglecting the total cost of ownership.
  • A new method was developed to calculate cost-per-reportable-test (CPRT) by including all hidden and fixed expenses, making it easier to compare financial results of different analyzer bids.
  • This approach revealed that costs for maintenance-free reagent rental bids were 47.4% lower than previous purchase-based costs, highlighting significant savings and more accurate comparisons among analyzers.

Article Synopsis
  • Chronic kidney disease (CKD) often coexists with diabetes, anemia, and uremia, presenting challenges in monitoring HbA1c levels.
  • A study conducted at Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Institute analyzed HbA1c values in 127 non-dialysis CKD patients using two methods: turbidimetric inhibition immunoassay (TINIA) and high-pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC).
  • Results showed TINIA was unable to detect HbA1c in 21.26% of patients, particularly anemic ones, and generally produced lower values than HPLC, especially in diabetic patients.

This study investigates the genetic variations in FcεR1β-109 C/T (rs512555) and TNF-α-308 G/A (rs1800629) genes and examines whether the mosquito repellent transfluthrin (TFT) modifies the risk for asthmatic children. A case-control study was conducted involving 130 asthmatic children and 123 age-sex matched controls. Differential leukocyte counts, IgE, and hs-CRP levels were estimated using a five-part haematology analyzer and Beckman Coulter (AU480), respectively.

Article Synopsis
  • This study investigates the role of essential metals in obesity and type 2 diabetes (T2DM) by comparing metal levels and fetuin-A (Fet-A) among different groups: diabetic obese, diabetic non-obese, non-diabetic obese, and non-diabetic non-obese subjects.
  • Results show that Fet-A levels are significantly higher in T2DM patients and differ notably between the various groups, correlating positively with insulin resistance and negatively with insulin sensitivity.
  • Metal levels, particularly copper, selenium, zinc, and iron, were found to be lower in diabetic patients and also show significant correlations with Fet-A and insulin metrics, indicating their potential importance in the diabesity-related pathology.

Objective: Pre-eclampsia is associated with ischemia and increased oxidative stress, which may lead to modification of plasma albumin to ischemia modified albumin (IMA).

Methods: IMA levels were estimated in cord blood of 30 newborns born to pre-eclamptic mothers and compared with 30 normal newborns. IMA was estimated colorimetrically and the results were compared statistically.
