Human-caused marine pollution poses a constant threat to marine ecosystems, particularly tropical mangrove forests, which are vulnerable to litter from both inland and marine sources due to inadequate waste management. Despite well-documented effects of marine litter on various maritime habitats, its impact on mangrove forests remains underexplored. This study investigates the abundance, composition, sources, and impacts of human-caused marine litter on mangroves along the Thoothukudi coast in the Gulf of Mannar, southeast India.

Background: Species of Prionomastix Mayr were not known from India when Manickavasagam and Rameshkumar 2011 and Rameshkumar and Poorani 2015 misidentified a new species as P. siccarius. Now it is corrected by explaining the characters as to why it is new and not P.

Background: Chalcidids are one of the most important parasitoids of pupae of agriculturally important pests belonging to orders like Lepidoptera, Diptera, Coleoptera and Hymenoptera. Such an important group has not been studied consistently by any team of workers from any country apart from the notable contributions by Boucek, Steffan, Delvare and Narendran. (Boucek 1988, Steffan 1973, Delvare 1992 and Narendran 1989).

Chronic heart failure (CHF) is associated with frequent hospitalizations and high mortality. It affects more than 5 million individuals in the USA, and another 660,000 new cases are diagnosed each year; overall, heart failure (HF) now accounts for 7% of all deaths from cardiovascular disease. Hypertension (HTN) increases the risk of development of HF and it precedes it in 75% of cases.

Fiber quality measurement is critical to assessing the value of a bale of cotton for various textile purposes. An instrument that could measure numerous cotton quality properties by optical means could be made simpler and faster than current fiber quality measurement instruments, and it might be more amenable to on-line measurement at processing facilities. To that end, a laser system was used to investigate cotton fiber samples with respect to electromagnetic scattering at various wavelengths, polarization angles, and scattering angles.

Endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) activation with subsequent inducible NOS (iNOS), cytosolic phospholipase A2 (cPLA2), and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX2) activation is essential to statin inhibition of myocardial infarct size (IS). In the rat, the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-gamma agonist pioglitazone (Pio) limits IS, upregulates and activates cPLA2 and COX2, and increases myocardial 6-keto-PGF1alpha levels without activating eNOS and iNOS. We asked whether Pio also limits IS in eNOS-/- and iNOS-/- mice.

Purpose: We asked whether caffeinated coffee (CC) blunts the infarct size (IS)-limiting effects of atorvastatin (ATV).

Background: Adenosine receptor activation is essential for mediating the IS-limiting effects of statins. Caffeine is a nonspecific adenosine receptor blocker, and thus drinking CC may block the myocardial protective effects of statins.

The angular variations of scattering-matrix elements of coated cylindrical particles are presented. The sensitivity of different elements for a number of physical parameters are discussed, including size parameter, real and imaginary parts of the refractive index of the outer coat, and the inner core. The numerical predictions are presented for typical index-of-refraction values of cotton fibers.

Several studies suggested that 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) reductase inhibitors (statins) activate peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-gamma (PPAR-gamma). Atorvastatin (ATV) increases myocardial levels of prostaglandins (PG) by upregulating and activating cytosolic-phospholipase-A(2) and cycloxygenase-2 (COX2). We investigated whether ATV activates PPAR-gamma via 15-deoxy-delta-12,14-PGJ(2) (15DPGJ(2)) an endogenous ligand of PPAR-gamma and a product of PGD(2), and to compare the effects of pioglitazone (PIO), a known direct PPAR-gamma activator, to that of ATV.

Background: Atorvastatin (ATV) protects against ischemia-reperfusion by upregulating Akt and subsequently, endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) phosphorylation at Ser-1177. However, when given orally, high doses of ATV (10 mg/kg/d) are needed to achieve maximal protective effect in the rat. Protein kinase A (PKA) also phosphorylates eNOS at Ser-1177.

Statins activate phosphatidylinositol-3-kinase, which activates ecto-5'-nucleotidase and phosphorylates 3-phosphoinositide-dependent kinase-1 (PDK-1). Phosphorylated (P-)PDK-1 phosphorylates Akt, which phosphorylates endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS). We asked if the blockade of adenosine receptors (A(1), A(2A), A(2B), or A(3) receptors) could attenuate the induction of Akt and eNOS by atorvastatin (ATV) and whether ERK1/2 is involved in the ATV regulation of Akt and eNOS.

Atorvastatin (ATV) limits infarct size (IS) by activating Akt and ecto-5-nucleotidase, which generates adenosine. Activated Akt and adenosine activate endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS). When given orally, high doses (10 mg/kg) are needed to achieve full protection.

Elliptically polarized light-scattering measurements were performed to investigate the dispersion behavior of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNT). Xylene- and pyridine-derived MWNT powders were dispersed in water and ethanol in separate optic cells and allowed to sit undisturbed over a two-week time period after probe sonication. Continuous light-scattering measurements taken between scattering angles of 10-170 deg and repeated over several days showed that the nanotubes formed fractal-like networks.

An elliptically polarized light scattering (EPLS) technique for the size and shape characterization of ellipsoidal hematite particles is presented. The hematite particles are synthesized by aging aqueous FeCl(3) or Fe(NO(3))(3) solutions at 100 degrees C. Different reaction conditions create particles of aspect ratios between 1 (spherical) and 8 (elongated).

The aggregation behavior of colloidal single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNT) in dilute aqueous suspensions was investigated using a novel light scattering measurement technique. The aggregation of SWNT in three suspensions was examined: (1) nanotubes after acid treatment; (2) as-received nanotubes stabilized by a nonionic surfactant; and (3) acid-treated nanotubes with nonionic surfactant. Continuous light scattering measurements of the SWNT suspensions (probing the 38-436 nm length scale) made over two weeks showed that the nanotubes in each sample formed networks with fractal-like structures.
