Cyanobacteria are photosynthetic prokaryotes that inhabit extreme environments by modifying their photosensitive chemoreceptors called cyanobacteriochromes (CBCRs) which are linear tetrapyrrole-linked phycobilin molecules. These light-sensitive phycobilin from Spirulina platensis is recognized as a potential photoreceptor tool in optogenetics for monitoring cellular morphogenesis.
