The direct epitaxial growth of high-quality III-V semiconductors on Si is a challenging materials science problem with a number of applications in optoelectronic devices, such as solar cells and on-chip lasers. We report the reduction of dislocation density in GaAs solar cells grown directly on nanopatterned V-groove Si substrates by metal-organic vapor-phase epitaxy. Starting from a template of GaP on V-groove Si, we achieved a low threading dislocation density (TDD) of 3 × 10 cm in the GaAs by performing thermal cycle annealing of the GaAs followed by growth of InGaAs dislocation filter layers.

Cation disorder is an established feature of heterovalent ternary nitrides, a promising class of semiconductor materials. A recently synthesized wurtzite-family ternary nitride, ZnTiN, shows potential for durable photoelectrochemical applications with a measured optical absorption onset of 2 eV, which is 1.4 eV lower than previously predicted, a large difference attributed to cation disorder.

The purpose of this study was to gain insight into histamine's role in the exercise inflammatory response and recovery from exercise. To explore this, young healthy participants (n = 12) performed 300 eccentric leg extensions under control (Placebo) versus histamine H and H receptor antagonism (Blockade) in a randomized cross-over study. Circulating leukocytes and cytokines were measured for 72 h after exercise.

We couple halide vapor phase epitaxy (HVPE) growth of III-V materials with liftoff from an ultrathin carbon release layer to address two significant cost components in III-V device - epitaxial growth and substrate reusability. We investigate nucleation and growth of GaAs layers by HVPE on a thin amorphous carbon layer that can be mechanically exfoliated, leaving the substrate available for reuse. We study nucleation as a function of carbon layer thickness and growth rate and find island-like nucleation.

Unlabelled: Medication errors are a leading safety concern, especially for families with limited English proficiency and health literacy, and patients discharged on multiple medications with complex schedules. Integration of a multilanguage electronic discharge medication platform may help decrease medication errors. This quality improvement (QI) project's primary aim (process measure) was to increase utilization in the electronic health record (EHR) of the integrated MedActionPlanPro (MAP) for cardiovascular surgery and blood and marrow transplant patients at hospital discharge and for the first clinic follow-up visit to 80% by July 2021.

Background: Analysis of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) using mass spectrometry is a relatively novel analytical tool, and comparisons of ventricular and cisternal proteomes are yet to be performed. This may have implications for clinical medicine, particularly in demonstrating continuity of the ventricular system with preserved flow in the presence of ventricular blood. Other uses include the identification of novel biomarkers, including for diagnosis of subarachnoid haemorrhage and of aetiology.

Photoelectrochemical fuel generation is a promising route to sustainable liquid fuels produced from water and captured carbon dioxide with sunlight as the energy input. Development of these technologies requires photoelectrode materials that are both photocatalytically active and operationally stable in harsh oxidative and/or reductive electrochemical environments. Such photocatalysts can be discovered based on co-design principles, wherein design for stability is based on the propensity for the photocatalyst to self-passivate under operating conditions and design for photoactivity is based on the ability to integrate the photocatalyst with established semiconductor substrates.

Recent Findings: Environmental acidity, biomechanics, and intercrystalline percolation of endemic fluoride regulate resistance to demineralization relative to osteopenia, noncarious cervical lesions, and dental caries. Demineralization is the most prevalent chronic disease in the world: osteoporosis (OP) >10%, dental caries ~100%.

Popularly known as "chalky teeth", molar hypomineralisation (MH) affects over 1-in-5 children worldwide, triggering massive amounts of suffering from toothache and rapid decay. Aerobic exercise induces mast cell degranulation and increases histamine formation by histidine decarboxylase, resulting in an ∼150% increase in intramuscular histamine. The purpose of this study was to determine if the increase in skeletal muscle temperature associated with exercise is sufficient to explain this histamine response. Specifically, we hypothesized that local passive heating that mimics the magnitude and time course of changes in skeletal muscle temperature observed during exercise would result in increased intramuscular histamine concentrations comparable to exercising values.

Introduction: The purpose of this study was to quantify and qualify the 3-dimensional (3D) condylar changes using mandibular 3D regional superimposition techniques in adolescent patients with Class II Division 1 malocclusions treated with either a 2-phase or single-phase approach.

Methods: Twenty patients with Herbst appliances who met the inclusion criteria and had cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images taken before, 8 weeks after Herbst removal, and after the completion of multibracket appliance treatment constituted the Herbst group. They were compared with 11 subjects with Class II malocclusion who were treated with elastics and multibracket appliances and who had CBCT images taken before and after treatment.

Introduction: Seizure-related protein 6 (Sez6) contributes to chronic pain development as knockout mice show attenuated pain behaviours after peripheral nerve injury, compared with control mice. The type I transmembrane isoform of Sez6 is cleaved by the β-amyloid precursor protein cleavage enzyme 1 (BACE1), resulting in Sez6 extracellular domain shedding from the neuron surface.

Objectives: To determine whether this BACE1-shed form of Sez6 can be detected in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and whether Sez6 levels in the CSF are altered in neuropathic pain or chronic inflammatory pain (IP).

Impaired therapeutic responses to anti-inflammatory glucocorticoids (GC) in chronic respiratory diseases are partly attributable to interleukins and transforming growth factor β1 (TGF-β1). However, previous efforts to prevent induction of GC insensitivity by targeting established canonical and non-canonical TGF-β1 pathways have been unsuccessful.
