Background: Misdiagnosis of multiple sclerosis (MS) is common and can have harmful effects on patients and healthcare systems. Identification of factors associated with misdiagnosis may aid development of prevention strategies.
Objective: To identify clinical and radiological predictors of MS misdiagnosis.
Here we describe two, separate, and unique radiological findings in two distinct patients, sequelae from prior silicone oil injection for management of retinal detachment. In both cases we present bilateral, frontal horn hyperdense "masses" without appreciable enhancement or surrounding vasogenic edema. Both cases serve as important reminders of the potential for silicone oil migration and its unique radiological presentation, which has the potential to be a radiologic mimic of intracerebral hemorrhage and significantly change medical management of individuals presenting with transient ischemic attack or cerebrovascular accident.

Among the range of imaging methods, however, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is unique in its applicability to studying both structure and function. Thus we additionally performed meta-analyses of MRI results to examine 1) the issue of anatomical variability and consistency for functional MRI (fMRI) findings, 2) the analogous issue of anatomical consistency for white-matter findings, and 3) the importance of accounting for the time post injury in diffusion weighted imaging reports.
