c-myc amplification coexistent with activating N-ras point mutation in the biphenotypic leukemic cell line RED-3.

While activation of the protooncogene c-N-ras is observed regularly in acute myelogenous leukemia, amplification of c-myc in AML cells or derived lines is uncommon. In particular, concurrent ras/myc activation, which has been shown to be critical in several elegant models of malignancy, has been demonstrated in a very small number of human tumors or derivative cell lines. A cell line, RED-3, is described which was derived from cells of a patient with aggressive acute leukemia which exhibits many markers of lineage infidelity.

Purification and characterization of human lysosomal membrane glycoproteins.

Two human cell lysosomal membrane glycoproteins of approximately 120 kDa, hLAMP-1 and hLAMP-2, were identified by use of monoclonal antibodies prepared against U937 myelomonocytic leukemia cells or blood mononuclear cells. The two glycoproteins were purified by antibody affinity chromatography and each was found to be a major constituent of human spleen cells, representing approximately 0.05% of the total detergent-extractable protein.

Studies of esterase 6 in Drosophila melanogaster. XVIII. Biochemical differences between the slow and fast allozymes.

Most natural populations of Drosophila melanogaster are polymorphic for two major electrophoretic variants at the esterase-6 locus. The frequency of the EST 6F allozyme is greatest in populations in warmer latitudes, whereas the EST 6S allozyme is predominant in colder latitudes. Latitudinal clines in electromorph frequencies are found on three continents.

[Neuron-specific serum enolase in patients with non-tumor pathologies].

In this brief communication, the authors indicate that amounts of neuron-specific enolase higher than 30 ng/ml are observed only in 1% of non-tumoral processes, and that when found in patients with respiratory symptoms a microcytic carcinoma of the lung can be suspected in 97% of the cases.

Male Esterase 6 Catalyzes the Synthesis of a Sex Pheromone in Drosophila melanogaster Females.

Esterase 6, a component of the seminal fluid of Drosophila melanogaster males, hydrolyzes cis-vaccenyl acetate, a lipid made only by males, to cis-vaccenyl alcohol. This reaction occurs in the female reproductive tract and is virtually complete within 6 hours after copulation. Both the alcohol and the acetate decrease the number of matings among pairs of virgin flies in which the female is treated topically with these substances.

The results of the various histochemical reactions on the mucosubstances in sections fixed in calcium acetate formol indicate on the presence of mucous cells only in the inner and middle marginal folds of the mantle edge. The mucous cells secreting neutral mucosubstances are located only in the middle fold, sulfomucin secreting cells in the inner fold. The mucous cells also contain protein.

Immunoassay for honey bee cytochrome c in single animals with cytochrome c-coated bacteriophages: a sensitive tool for the study of caste formation in the honey bee, Apis mellifera.

The development of a sensitive viroimmunoassay for honey bee cytochrome c and its usage for early detection of caste differentiation is described. Pure honey bee cytochrome c was isolated from workers and used to produce antibodies in rabbits. Bacteriophage T4 was chemically modified by covalent attachment of honey bee cytochrome c using tolylene-2,4-diisocyanate as a cross-linking agent.

Histochemical analysis of mucosubstances of the mid-gut gland in the mussel Lamellidens consobrinus Lea.

The mid-gut gland of the fresh water mussel Lamellidens consobrinus is located on both sides of the crystalline style sac and the conducting chamger of the intestine. Standard histochemical techniques were employed for the detection of mucosubstances elaborated by the mid-gut gland. The results show that he gland secretes neutral mucins and sialomucins which act as lubricants and are involved in converying good particles during feeding.
