Purpose: To assess the prognostic implications of mediastinal positron emission tomographic (PET) findings in patients undergoing curative resection of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) who have histologically negative mediastinal lymph nodes (LNs), with the hypothesis that positive findings at PET are prognostic even in patients with negative histologic findings in the LNs.
Materials And Methods: Records of patients with a preoperative PET undergoing curative surgery, without adjuvant radiation, for pathologic T1-3N0-1 NSCLC at the University of North Carolina between 2000 and 2006 were reviewed as an institutional review board-approved HIPAA-compliant retrospective study. Ninety patients were evaluable (all histologically negative in mediastinum; 44 with both mediastinoscopy and surgery); 13 patients had positive mediastinal PET findings, and 77 had negative mediastinal PET findings.

Purpose: Iododeoxyuridine (IUdR) is a halogenated pyrimidine recognized as the thymidine substitute in DNA. When labeled with iodine 125, IUdR can be used as a carrier to incorporate the isotope into DNA and target the dividing cells. The purpose of this study was to assess the maximum uptake of IUdR by proliferating smooth muscle cells (SMCs) in vitro to determine the optimal concentration to be administered in an in vivo experiment.

Purpose: Benzamide riboside (BR) causes apoptosis in multiple tumor cell lines by its inhibition of guanylate biosynthesis. The purpose of this study was to determine the feasibility of the use of BR as a therapeutic agent for hepatic artery infusional cancer therapy in a rabbit VX2 papilloma tumor model.
Materials And Methods: VX2 tumor was implanted into the left lobe of the liver of each of 14 New Zealand White rabbits and allowed to grow for 19 days +/- 3.
