The present study describes the clinicopathological features of a mature cystic ovarian teratoma occurred in a 4 year old, cyclic, nulliparous Andalusian mare. The mass was discovered in the left ovary during a breeding soundness examination, and was hard in consistency and variously echogenic. Laparoscopy was performed to confirm the neoplastic change, followed by a unilateral laparotomic ovariectomy in the standing animal.

A prospective study was undertaken to assess the radiotoxicity of accelerated particles in pulmonary alveolar macrophages (AM). We evaluated the effects of a single dose (10-75 Gy) of an external low-energy (20 MeV) proton beam on cultured AM oxidative metabolism and phagocytic function. Macrophages are the first line of defense against invading pathogens and are known to generate superoxide anion (O2), nitric oxide (NO), and mediators of antimicrobial and antitumoral defense mechanisms.

JC virus (JCV) is an unique virus, but eight different JCV genotypes and various subtypes have been individuated, with a geographic distribution that has been described in general but still needs to be detailed. To define JCV genotype epidemiology in Italy, the authors collected urine from 211 healthy individuals living in Northern, Central, and Southern Continental Italy, and in the two main Italian islands. After the introduction of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART), the incidence of many acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS)-related opportunistic infections, but not of progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML), has been dramatically decreased. However, it has been shown that about 50% of the HAART-treated PML patients had a significantly prolonged (>6 months) survival time, in comparison to the short (<6 months) survival time of the classical form of PML. In order to verify if a particular genotype or genomic rearrangements of JC virus (JCV) could affect the clinical course of PML, the authors performed nucleotide sequencing of 25 virion protein (VP1) and 18 transcriptional control region (TCR) DNA amplified in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of HAART-untreated PML patients, of 17 HAART-treated PML patients, and in the urine of 23 healthy individuals.

To verify the possibility of different role of JC virus genotypes in the etiology of progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy, we analysed several JC virus isolates amplified from AIDS patients with and without progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy and healthy controls by nucleotide sequencing. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) and urine from 52 AIDS patients suffering from various neurological diseases including 21 cases of progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy, and PBMCs and urine from healthy subjects were evaluated by nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for the presence of DNA belonging to the highly conserved large T antigen (LT) of JC virus. The different JC virus subtypes were identified by nucleotide sequence analysis of the virion protein (VP1) genomic region.

To verify the possible role of human herpesviruses as triggering or aggravating factors in relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS) clinical acute attack, we studied the prevalence of some herpesviruses in the peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) collected from 22 MS patients during an MS relapse and in a stable phase and from 18 healthy controls (HC). DNA belonging to Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) and type 2 (HSV-2), Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV), Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) and Human Herpes virus 6 (HHV-6) has been searched by specific nested polymerase chain reaction (n-PCR). EBV and HHV6 DNA has been detected with high frequency in acute and stable MS and in healthy controls without significant differences.

In order to investigate the potential role of endothelins (ETs) and nitric oxide (NO) in the pathogenesis of multiple sclerosis (MS) we evaluated the levels of these vasoactive mediators in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of relapsing remitting MS patients and in a group of subjects with other neurological diseases (OND) and in a control group of subjects without neurological disease. Eighty patients affected from clinically diagnosed MS were selected, 44 of them were studied during an acute clinical attack and 36 in a stable phase. The OND group included 21 subjects affected by degenerative non inflammatory (n=9) and inflammatory (n=12) neurological disease while the control group included 22 subjects with cancer of the prostate (n=11) and with bladder disease (n=11).

To verify the possible effect of IFN-beta treatment on auto antibodies development in multiple sclerosis (MS) we studied 69 MS patients before and during the treatment with IFN-beta 1b (n=35) and IFN-beta 1a (n=20) for 27 and 12 months respectively, and, as controls, 14 untreated MS patients. The serum, collected every 3 months from all the patients, was investigated for the presence of antinuclear (ANA), anti-smooth muscle (ASMA), anti-mitochondrial (AMA), anti-native DNA (nDNA) anti-cardiolipin (aCL), anti-parietal cells (APCA), anti-microsomal (AMC) and anti-tireoglobulin (ATG) antibodies. Among the IFN-beta 1b-treated MS patients an increase of the frequency and of the level of ANA, AMC and ATG was observed.

Human myelin basic protein (hMBP) gene is one of the candidate genes in the complex mosaic of multiple sclerosis (MS) susceptibility. In this study we verified the distribution of the polymorphism of the region 5' flanking the first exon of the hMBP gene, in 97 relapsing remitting, 74 primary progressive Italian MS patients, and in 236 healthy controls, using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and gel electrophoresis analysis in this region from 1116 - 1540 nt. Three different band patterns were observed: one homozygote with a 354 bp long fragment, one homozygote with 424 bp long fragment and one heterozygote with both bands present.

Human herpesvirus-6 (HHV-6) is the etiologic agent of roseola infantum, and has been implicated as a possible cause of encephalitis in pediatric and adult patients. A case of meningoencephalitis in an otherwise healthy, immunocompetent 59-year-old woman is described. The diagnosis of HHV-6 meningoencephalitis was confirmed by detecting viral DNA in cerebrospinal fluid collected in the acute stage of the disease by polymerase chain reaction.

Using molecular methods three or five major variants of HTLV-I have been identified; moreover two subtypes of HTLV-II defined as HTLV-IIa and HTLV-IIb with six variants within each of these groups have been described. In the present study we analysed proviral DNA obtained from the peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) of a significant group of Italian intravenous drug users (IVDUs), prison inmates and blood donors (BDs) who were HTLV antibody positive. Restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) of amplified LTR region with ApaI, NdeI, DraI, SacI and MaeIII endonucleases was used to define the HTLV-I subtypes, while the different variants of HTLV-IIa and -IIb were defined by RFLP of the LTR region with the AvaII, BglI, SauI, XhoI and BanII endonucleases.

Objectives: A study was performed to determine whether persistent or latent viruses are reactivated during the acute attack in relapsing remitting multiple sclerosis (MS).

Material And Methods: DNA of herpes simplex virus type 1 and 2 (HSV-1 and -2), human cytomegalovirus (HCMV), Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), JC virus (JCV) and HTLV-I was searched, using nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR), in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) collected from 14 MS patients on the first day and, twice a week, during an acute attack of the disease.

Results: Viral DNA was detected, in at least one PBMC sample, in all the patients.
