Using deep-learning algorithms to derive basic characteristics of social media users: The Brexit campaign as a case study.

A recurrent criticism concerning the use of online social media data in political science research is the lack of demographic information about social media users. By employing a face-recognition algorithm to the profile pictures of Facebook users, the paper derives two fundamental demographic characteristics (age and gender) of a sample of Facebook users who interacted with the most relevant British parties in the two weeks before the Brexit referendum of 23 June 2016. The article achieves the goals of (i) testing the precision of the algorithm, (ii) testing its validity, (iii) inferring new evidence on digital mobilisation, and (iv) tracing the path for future developments and application of the algorithm.

Cerebral perfusion and compensatory blood supply in patients with recent small subcortical infarcts.

Hypoperfusion is the typical perfusion pattern associated with recent small subcortical infarcts of the brain, but other perfusion patterns may be present in patients with these infarcts. Using CT perfusion, we studied 67 consecutive patients who had a small subcortical infarct at a follow-up MRI study to investigate the correlation between the perfusion pattern and the clinical and radiological course. On CT perfusion map analysis, 51 patients (76%) had focal hypoperfusion, 4 patients (6%) had hyperperfusion and the remaining 12 patients (18%) showed no abnormalities.

The Spreading of Cohabitation as a Diffusion Process: Evidence from Italy.

Drawing on seminal work by Nazio and Blossfeld (Eur J Popul 19(1):47-82, 2003) and Di Giulio and Rosina (Demogr Res 16(14):441-468, 2007), this paper tests whether the recent spread of cohabitation in Italy has followed the typical pattern of diffusion of innovation processes. Goat mtDNA haplogroup A is a poorly resolved lineage absorbing most of the overall diversity and is found in locations as distant as Eastern Asia and Southern Africa. Its phylogenetic dissection would cast light on an important portion of the spread of goat breeding. The aims of this work were 1) to provide an operational definition of meaningful mtDNA units within haplogroup A, 2) to investigate the mechanisms underlying the maintenance of diversity by considering the modes of selection operated by breeders and 3) to identify the peculiarities of Sardinian mtDNA types.

The rare disease of pulmonary alveolar microlithiasis is characterized by innumerable microscopic stones, mainly of tribasic calcium phosphate, within the pulmonary alveoli. In a 13-year-old boy an earlier radiological examination showed diffuse lung opacity. The main differential diagnoses taken into consideration were sarcoidosis, idiopathic hemosiderosis, diffuse interstitial fibrosis and alveolar proteinosis.
