The most common nonmelanoma skin cancers (NMSC) are basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). The incidence of NMSC is 18-20 times higher than the incidence of melanoma. The Cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and Matrix Metalloproteinase-1 (MMP-1) enzymes have both been linked to the development of these diseases but their exact significance is unknown.

Dear Editor, The diagnosis of malignant melanoma accounts for 1-2% of all cancer diagnoses, around 4% of all malignant skin diseases, and 80% of all skin cancer deaths (1). The prognosis depends on several factors including tumor size, Clark level, Breslow thickness, location, ulceration, and presence of metastases. Detection of lymph node metastasis is initially accomplished by clinical examination and by operative evaluation for occult metastasis using sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) when indicated (2).

Background: A correct estimation of total burn surface area is important since it is used for determining fluid resuscitation volumes, nutritional estimates and hospital admission criteria. Wallace's rule of nines is the most commonly used methods for this purpose. However, fat distribution is non-uniform and the total body surface area changes with obesity.

Invasive breast carcinoma is the most common oncologic disease worldwide. The existing diagnostic methods use morphologic changes in the breast to diagnose a carcinoma when it has reached a certain size. Therefore, it is important to augment the morphologic diagnostic examinations with a new method that focuses on characteristics other than morphology such as electromagnetic changes produced by cancer.

Introduction: Any alteration or impairment to normal wound healing can result in the development of chronic wounds, which may lead to serious complications such as infection and loss of body fluid and proteins. Primary closure alone may not be sufficient to fulfill the criteria of successful defect reconstruction. Therefore, additional procedures such as skin grafting must be considered as an option.

Background: Rectus sheath hematoma (RSH) is a rare but potentially dangerous clinical entity that requires medical supervision.

Case Report: Here we discuss one such case which describes the fatal course of spontaneous RSH during hospital admission.

Conclusion: Usually, RSH presents as a minimal abdominal wall swelling with self-limiting course but in the case of hematoma and size progression, specific conservative or invasive measures are necessary to prevent serious complications including hypovolemic shock and death.

The challenges of managing Gustilo IIIB tibial fractures (ie, high energy trauma with a contaminated wound >10 cm in length, severe comminution ["crumbling"] or segmental fractures, and periosteal stripping) in children are unique in part because no clear guidelines exist and the injuries may cause short-term and long-term complications. Repeated wound debridement and secondary reconstruction are required in approximately 20% of these cases in both adults and children. A 13-year-old girl presented with severe polytrauma including an open Gustilo type IIIB fracture of the left lower leg.

Plaster splints are used daily in surgical and orthopedic fields in order to immobilize injured children and adults. The aim of this study was to measure the aerodynamic diameter and concentration of dust particles in the air caused by sawing plaster splints (calcium sulfate dehy-drate). We performed fractional measurements of airborne dust particles.

Purpose: For patients at high-risk of developing hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), biannual ultrasound surveillance has long been recommended, in order to detect the tumor in the early, potentially curative stages. However, globally reported HCC surveillance rates vary greatly, ranging from as low as 1.7 to as high as 80%.

Concomitant presence of hydatid cyst and hepatocellular carcinoma is a very rare clinical scenario especially in a previously non-diseased liver. Including our case here reported, there are 12 cases of synchronous HCC and hydatid cyst found in the scientific literature and 3 of them were found in a patient with non-diseased liver. We provide detailed review of all reported cases with additional highlights on etiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis, treatment and outcomes of both HCC and echinococcal disease.

The associating liver partition and portal vein ligation (ALPPS) is a novel procedure with increasing number of scientific and clinical studies, and by now, it showed to be efficient and safe procedure in selected group of patients. Here we present the first case of ALPPS done after double TACE procedure in a 64-years-old female patient with extensive hepatocellular carcinoma of the right liver lobe. The procedure was successful and liver remnant showed significant 90% hypertrophy which proves that ALPPS sometimes can be performed after palliative procedures in liver malignancies.

Background: Various types of benign and malignant splenic tumours including hemangiomas, lymphagiomas, hamartomas, hemangiosarcomas, malignant lymphomas and metastatic carcinomas share radiological characteristics making it impossible for a physician to determine the definite aetiology of splenic masses noninvasively without histopathological evaluation. It is important that physicians recognize the importance of a careful and continuous follow-up since inflammatory pseudotumours (IPT) are considered to be tumours with an intermediate malignant potential based on their behaviour when they arise in other locations.

Methods: Our patient, a 60-year-old woman was evaluated using laboratory, gastroscopy, computed tomography and surgical methods.

Psoriasis is one of the most prevalent immune mediated skin diseases worldwide. Despite the large prevalence in both men and women, the pathogenesis of this disease has not yet been fully clarified. Nowadays, it is believed that psoriasis is most likely a T helper Th1/Th17 induced inflammatory disease.

Results of our study describe the long term effects of reduction mammaplasty. Many women with excessively small or large breasts have an altered personal self-image and often suffer from low self-esteem and other psychological stresses. This procedure is designed to reduce and reshape large breasts, and since the size, shape, and symmetry of a woman's breasts can have a profound effect on her mental and physical well-being it is important to observe the patient's long-term outcome.

Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin disorder clinically characterized by erythematous, sharply demarcated papules and rounded plaques covered by silvery micaceous scale. While the exact causes of psoriasis have yet to be discovered, the immune system and genetics are known to play major roles in its development. Many external factors including infections, stress and medications may exacerbate psoriasis.

Hypothermia is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in infants; therefore, maintaining normal body temperatures in the delivery room is crucial. An understanding of how infants produce heat and what can be done to maintain normal body temperatures in full-term and preterm infants is essential for the preservation of thermal stability in this population. This article reviews the consequences of hypothermia, mechanisms of heat exchange and heat production in full-term and low birth-weight infants, and discusses interventions in the delivery room to alleviate hypothermia.

Background: High fluid volumes may increase neonatal morbidity. However, evidence supporting fluid restriction is inconclusive and restricting fluids may restrict caloric intake.

Objective: To determine if higher fluid intake was associated with increased risk of patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) or bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) in extremely low birth weight (ELBW) infants.

This study was designed to evaluate the effects of chronic exercise training on carnitine acetyl- and palmitoyltransferase activity and the distribution of carnitine forms and concentrations in various organs and tissues of female rats. Sprague-Dawley rats were swim trained 6 days/wk and progressed to 75-min swims twice daily (with 3% of their total body weight attached to the medial portion of the tail) at the end of 5 wk of training. Sedentary (S, n = 12) and trained (T, n = 13) animals were killed by decapitation, and the livers, kidneys, hearts, and several skeletal muscle types were removed and immediately frozen in liquid N2 and/or extracted for enzyme activity assays.

Previous research in this laboratory demonstrated a reduction in expiratory reserve volume of the lungs (ERV) with increasing body fatness (%F, by densitometry). The present study was done to determine if smaller ERV values could be demonstrated in lean female athletes with greater than normal upper-body muscle development. Expiratory reserve volume, vital capacity (VC), and segmental body volumes by densitometry were measured in members of two collegiate women's teams--gymnastics (G) (N = 10) and track (R) (N = 10).
