Background: Long-term exposure of pancreatic islets to fatty acids (FAs), common in obesity, metabolic syndrome, and type 2 diabetes, leads to a compensatory hyperactivity followed by inflammation, apoptosis, dysfunctional beta cells, and results in insulin dependence of the patient.
