Indian J Hematol Blood Transfus
October 2023
Patients with thalassemia and sickle cell disease (SCD) require blood transfusions as part of their supportive care. However, one of the most serious side effects of this treatment is the risk of red cell alloimmunization. The goal of this study was to assess the prevalence and Specificity of red cell alloimmunization in Egyptian thalassemia and sickle cell anaemia patients.

We investigated gene variants in the acute-phase serum amyloid A type 1 (SAA1), a sensitive marker of inflammatory activity, and their association with susceptibility and severity of FMF.
Methods: The genotypes of 2 single-nucleotide polymorphisms within exon 3 of SAA1 (2995C/T and 3010C/T) were determined in 105 Egyptian children with FMF and in 125 controls by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism.
Background: Given the burden and poor outcome of end-stage renal disease in sickle cell disease (SCD), early markers of sickle cell nephropathy (SN) are desirable. Disordered angiogenesis underlies many complications of SCD. We aimed to determine the relationship between serum FMS-like tyrosine kinase-1 (sFLT-1) and other biomarkers of renal damage for the early diagnosis of SN.

The glutathione S-transferases (GSTT1 and GSTM1) are phase II enzymes thought to protect the airways from oxidative stress. Few and contradictory data are available on the association between asthma development and GSTT1 and GSTM1 polymorphisms in different ethnic groups.

Survivin and X-linked inhibitor of apoptosis protein (XIAP) are 2 members of the inhibitor of apoptosis proteins family (IAP). We used semi-quantitative reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) to determine the levels of expression of survivin and XIAP in 30 patients with de novo acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and 20 age- and sex-matched healthy volunteers.
