Recent literature on the morphological results of the application of polymers produced from lactic acid (polylactides--PLA), contains a plethora of experimental and clinical data on the efficiency and safety of their use for the medico-biological purposes. However, the question on the actual rate of biological disintegration of PLA materials remains unanswered. There are conflicting views on the inflammatory reaction ranging from a complete negation of an inflammatory response to PLA implantation up to the reports describing the expressed aseptic inflammatory reactions caused by presence of this material in tissues.

The objective of this study was to examine the peculiarities of tissue reactions during the degradation of "Collost" bioplastic material on the collagen basis with completely preserved fibrous structure, after its implantation into the bone tissue defect. The reaction of the surrounding tissues to the implantation of biodegradable suture materials (plain catgut threads, DemeTECH polyglactin 910, Surgilactin--polyglactin 910) into the subcutaneous adipose tissue of rats, was studied using light microscopy 1, 2, 6 and 12 months after grafting. It was shown that the tissue reactions to implantation of different biodegradable suture materials followed the general pattern characteristic of wound healing and foreign body reaction. By the first month of observation, in all the animal groups, the stage of traumatic perifocal inflammation was replaced by a proliferative phase with the new growth of the blood vessels and connective tissue.

The structure, harmonic frequencies, and infrared intensities of the fundamental transitions of potassium hydrogen/deuterium maleate crystals have been computed by the density functional theory with periodic boundary conditions. Different functionals with all-electron Gaussian-type orbital (GTO) basis set have been used. It was found that BLYP/GTO approximation provides the best results for the structural parameters of the KH maleate crystal.

A series of novel heterocyclic combinatorial libraries containing 4H-thieno[3,2-b]pyrrole, thieno[2',3':4,5]-pyrrol[1,2-d][1,2,4]triazine and thieno[2',3':4,5]pyrrolo[1,2-a]pyrazine heterocyclic moieties were obtained by parallel solution-phase synthesis. Key steps include different reactions of initial alkyl 4H-thieno[3,2-b]-pyrrole-5-carboxylates, such as alkylation with alkylating agents; transformation of the carboxylate group into different reactive functionalities, followed by reactions with electrophilic species; intramolecular cyclizations; and amide bond formation. Simple manual techniques for parallel reactions were coupled with easy purification procedures to give high-purity final products.

The article presents scientific results obtained in Russian Research Center for Railway Hygiene and connected with better organization of treatment, prophylaxis, sanitation and occupational hygiene in Moscow Locomotive Repair Works (MLRW). The authors represent data on transitory disablement morbidity for 1988-1992, which prove efficiency of sanitation approaches put into practice on MLRW.
