Investigation of the Consumer Perspective on Leisure in Mental Health Inpatient Units.

This study aimed to explore the barriers to engagement in activity and consumer satisfaction in inpatient settings. Participants were current inpatient consumers and completed an online anonymous survey. This included the Mental Health Satisfaction Improvement Program (MHSIP), Leisure Boredom Scale (LBS), and the Checklist of Leisure Interests and Participation (CLIP).

Outcomes of a co-located approach for metabolic health care for people with schizophrenia.

Objective: Metabolic syndrome is highly prevalent among people with schizophrenia. This study aims to assess the impact on metabolic and attendance outcomes of a co-located, dedicated, endocrinologist-led metabolic clinic in a stand-alone public community mental health service.

Methods: Demographic and metabolic data on the first 48 consecutive referrals over a 12-month period were retrospectively collected and analysed.

LOVE in the time of Covid-19: a brief mental health intervention to overcome loneliness.

Objective: The coronavirus disease 2019 outbreak and its containment through public health strategies has resulted in a parallel pandemic of psychological distress. Increased loneliness and social isolation are associated with adverse health outcomes, yet there is a gap in brief interventions that specifically target loneliness. This article introduces a brief intervention to strengthen connectedness, LOVE.

Life in 90 words: opportunities for person-centred care amidst COVID-19.

Placing rehabilitation at the core of assertive community treatment.

Objectives: Assertive community treatment (ACT) teams are increasingly being adapted to suit the needs of consumers who have never experienced long-term institutional care yet struggle to retain community tenure and quality of life due to residual functional disabilities associated with severe mental illness. Support needs can be provided by the growing disability support sector but recovery-orientated rehabilitation services delivered by specialist rehabilitation clinicians are also required. The Mobile Intensive Rehabilitation Team (MIRT) within the Metro South Addiction and Mental Health Service has adapted the ACT model to deliver assertive outreach that aims to work collaboratively with the person and their chosen supports to improve their function and their sense of self-efficacy in illness self-management.

Embedding Recovery to Transform Inpatient Mental Health Care: The 333 Model.

Objective: The 333 model is a radical redesign of acute mental health care. Time-limited inpatient pathways for assessment (≤3 days), treatment (≤3 weeks), and recovery (≤3 months) replaced traditional geographical-sector wards. By making beds available, 333 aspired to improve access, deliver early treatment, and shorten hospital stays-generating savings through reductions in beds and out-of-area placements (OAPs).

Decision-making in crisis resolution and home treatment teams: The AWARE framework.

Aims and methodThe aim of the study is to improve patient safety by identifying factors influencing gatekeeping decisions by crisis resolution and home treatment teams. A theoretical sampling method was used to recruit clinicians. Semi-structured interviews to elicit various aspects of clinical decision-making were carried out.

PROGRESS: the PROMISE governance framework to decrease coercion in mental healthcare.

Reducing physical intervention in mental health inpatient care is a global priority. It is extremely distressing both to patients and staff. PROactive Management of Integrated Services and Environments (PROMISE) was developed within Cambridgeshire and Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust (CPFT) to bring about culture change to decrease coercion in care.

Is restraint a 'necessary evil' in mental health care? Mental health inpatients' and staff members' experience of physical restraint.

Restraint in mental health care has negative consequences, and guidelines/policies calling for its reduction have emerged internationally. However, there is tension between reducing restraint and maintaining safety. In order to reduce restraint, it is important to gain an understanding of the experience for all involved.

Long-term hospitalizations for schizophrenia in the Czech Republic 1998-2012.

Deinstitutionalization has not been pursued in the post-communist Europe until recently. The population of psychiatric patients institutionalized in the regional mental hospitals is, however, largely understudied. The aim of this study is to assess discharges of long-term inpatients with schizophrenia from Czech psychiatric hospitals and to analyse re-hospitalizations within this group.

PROMISE. Beyond frontiers.

The concepts underlying the PROMISE initiative are described. This initiative to implement more humane healthcare is now developing from a local initiativein Cambridge to a global movement.

Serotonin and dopamine play complementary roles in gambling to recover losses.

Continued gambling to recover losses--'loss chasing'--is a prominent feature of social and pathological gambling. However, little is known about the neuromodulators that influence this behavior. In three separate experiments, we investigated the role of serotonin activity, D(2)/D(3) receptor activity, and beta-adrenoceptor activity on the loss chasing of age and IQ-matched healthy adults randomized to treatment or an appropriate control/placebo.

Schizophrenia delays and alters maturation of the brain in adolescence.

Early-onset schizophrenia appears to be clinically more severe than the adult-onset form of the disease. In a previous study, we showed that anatomically related grey and white matter abnormalities found in adolescents patients were larger and more widespread than what had been reported in the literature on adult schizophrenia. Particularly, we found novel structural abnormalities in the primary sensorimotor and premotor systems.

Confirmation of the genetic association between the U2AF homology motif (UHM) kinase 1 (UHMK1) gene and schizophrenia on chromosome 1q23.3.

UHMK1 has previously been implicated as a susceptibility gene for schizophrenia in the 1q23.3 region by significant evidence of allelic and haplotypic association between schizophrenia and several genetic markers at UHMK1 in a London-based case-control sample. Further fine mapping of the UHMK1 gene locus in the University College London schizophrenia case-control sample was carried out with tagging SNPs.

Bilateral generic working memory circuit requires left-lateralized addition for verbal processing.

According to the Baddeley-Hitch model, phonological and visuospatial representations are separable components of working memory (WM) linked by a central executive. The traditional view that the separation reflects the relative contribution of the 2 hemispheres (verbal WM--left; spatial WM--right) has been challenged by the position that a common bilateral frontoparietal network subserves both domains. Here, we test the hypothesis that there is a generic WM circuit that recruits additional specialized regions for verbal and spatial processing.

5HT(3) antagonism abolishes the emotion potentiated startle effect in humans.

Rationale: The serotonergic system has been implicated in emotional processing in animals and humans. Although the contribution of different receptor subtypes has been hypothesised, there have been few direct tests of this in human subjects.

Objectives: The current study aimed to explore the involvement of the serotonin type 3 (5HT3) receptor subtype in a battery of emotional processing tasks previously found to be sensitive to SSRI administration.
