Functionalizing surfaces with self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) allows to efficiently bind bioreceptors, for instance, by bio-orthogonal click reactions, which is useful in biosensor fabrication. Control of the bioreceptor concentration on the surface can be achieved by coating an SAM mixture consisting of a functional SAM, which binds the bioreceptor, and a nonfunctional SAM for dilution. In this work, a novel vapor-based coating approach for the preparation of mixed SAM coatings is presented.

Schizophrenia's cognitive deficits, often overshadowed by positive symptoms, significantly contribute to the disorder's morbidity. Increasing attention highlights these deficits as reflections of neural circuit dysfunction across various cortical regions. Numerous connectivity alterations linked to cognitive symptoms in psychotic disorders have been reported, both at the macroscopic and microscopic level, emphasizing the potential role of plasticity and microcircuits impairment during development and later stages.

Schizophrenia is a debilitating neuropsychiatric disorder whose underlying correlates remain unclear despite decades of neuroimaging investigation. One contentious topic concerns the role of global signal (GS) fluctuations and how they affect more focal functional changes. Moreover, it has been difficult to pinpoint causal mechanisms of circuit disruption.

Unlabelled: Most forms of Alzheimer's disease are sporadic. A model of sporadic Alzheimer's disease induced with bilateral intraventricular injection of streptozotocin leads to insulin resistance in the brain accompanied by memory decline, synaptic dysfunction, amyloid plaque deposition, oxidative stress, and neuronal apoptosis, all of which mimic the pathologies associated with sporadic Alzheimer's disease. Myelin injury is an essential component of Alzheimer's disease, playing a key role in early cognitive impairment.

White matter degeneration and demyelination are nonnegligible pathological manifestations of Alzheimer's disease (AD). The damage of myelin sheath consisting of oligodendrocytes is the basis of AD's unique early lesions. Shenzhiling oral liquid (SZL) was the effective Chinese herbal compound approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of AD in China, which plays the exact therapeutic role in clinical AD patients.

Background: Cholinergic dysfunction and oxidative stress are the crucial mechanisms of Alzheimer's disease (AD). GAPT, also called GEPT (a combination of several active components extracted from the Chinese herbs ginseng, epimedium, polygala and tuber curcumae) or Jinsiwei, is a patented Chinese herbal compound, has been clinically widely used to improve learning and memory impairment, but whether it can play a neuroprotective role by protecting cholinergic neurons and reducing oxidative stress injury remains unclear.

Methods: Male ICR mice were intraperitoneally injected with scopolamine (3 mg/kg) to establish a learning and memory disordered model.

Inclusions in evaporitic minerals sometimes contain remnants of microorganisms or biomarkers, which can be considered as traces of life. Raman spectroscopy with resonance enhancement is one of the best analytical methods to search for such biomarkers in places of interest for astrobiology, including the surface and near subsurface of planet Mars. Portable Raman spectrometers are used as training tools for detection of biomarkers.

One strategy to address new potential dangers is to generate defensive responses to stimuli that remind learned threats, a phenomenon called fear generalization. During a threatening experience, the brain encodes implicit and explicit memory traces. Nevertheless, there is a lack of studies comparing implicit and explicit response patterns to novel stimuli.

We present a comparison of the performance of four miniature portable Raman spectrometers for the discrimination of carotenoids in samples of carotene-producing microorganisms. Two spectrometers using a green laser allowing to obtain Resonance Raman (or pre-Resonance Raman) signals, one instrument with a 785 nm laser, and a recently developed Portable Sequentially Shifted Excitation Raman spectrometer (PSSERS) were used for identifying major pigments of different halophilic (genera , , , , , ) and non-halophilic microorganisms (, ). Using all the tested instruments including the PSSERS, strong carotenoids signals corresponding to the stretching vibrations in the polyene chain and in-plane rocking modes of the attached CH groups were found at the correct positions.

A number of studies have shown that early-stage Alzheimer's disease (AD) is associated with abnormal brain glucose metabolism before cognitive decline, which may be the key pathological change of asymptomatic AD. The pathogenesis of AD in traditional Chinese medicine is kidney deficiency and turbid phlegm. Based on this, GAPT (a mixture of herbal extracts) was made to invigorate kidney Yang and eliminate phlegm.

To study biological phenomena in the Dead Sea and to simulate the effects of mixing Dead Sea water with Red Sea water, experimental mesocosms were operated at the Dead Sea Works at Sedom, Israel. Dense communities of red halophilic archaea developed in mesocosms filled with 80 % Dead Sea water and 20 % Red Sea water after enrichment with phosphate. The most common type of colonies isolated from these brines belonged to the genus Halorubrum.

Growth of Salinibacter ruber, a red, extremely halophilic bacterium phylogenetically affiliated with the Flavobacterium/Cytophaga branch of the domain Bacteria, is stimulated by glycerol. In contrast to glucose consumption, which starts only after more easily degradable substrates present in yeast extract have been depleted, glycerol is consumed during the earliest growth phases. When U-(14)C-labeled glycerol was added to the culture, up to 25% of the radioactivity was incorporated by the cells.

Growth of Salinibacter ruber, a red, extremely halophilic bacterium phylogenetically affiliated with the Flavobacterium/Cytophaga branch of the domain Bacteria, is stimulated by a small number of sugars (glucose, maltose, starch at 1 g l(-1)). Glucose consumption starts after other substrates have been depleted. Glucose metabolism proceeds via a constitutive, salt-inhibited hexokinase and a constitutive salt-dependent nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADP)-linked glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase.
