Urinary tract infections (UTIs) represent the most prevalent type of outpatient infection, with significant adverse health and economic burdens. Current culture-based antibiotic susceptibility testing can take up to 72 h resulting in ineffective prescription of broad-spectrum antibiotics, poor clinical outcomes and development of further antibiotic resistance. We report an electrochemical lab-on-a-chip (LOC) for testing samples against seven clinically-relevant antibiotics.

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are one of the most common types of bacterial infection. UTIs can be associated with multidrug resistant bacteria and current methods of determining an effective antibiotic for UTIs can take up to 48 hours, which increases the chances of a negative prognosis for the patient. In this paper we report for the first time, the fabrication of resazurin bulk modified screen-printed macroelectrodes (R-SPEs) demonstrating them to be effective platforms for the electrochemical detection of antibiotic susceptibility in complicated UTIs.

The oxidation of highly toxic arsenite (As(III)) was studied using humic acid-coated magnetite nanoparticles (HA-MNP) as a photosensitizer. Detailed characterization of the HA-MNP was carried out before and after the photoinduced treatment of As(III) species. Upon irradiation of HA-MNP with 350 nm light, a portion of the As(III) species was oxidized to arsenate (As(V)) and was nearly quantitatively removed from the aqueous solution.

Triple negative breast cancers (TNBCs) lack recurrent targetable driver mutations but demonstrate frequent copy number aberrations (CNAs). Here, we describe an integrative genomic and RNAi-based approach that identifies and validates gene addictions in TNBCs. CNAs and gene expression alterations are integrated and genes scored for pre-specified target features revealing 130 candidate genes.

Effective removal of excess phosphate from water is critical to counteract eutrophication and restore water quality. In this study, low cost, environmentally friendly humic acid coated magnetite nanoparticles (HA-MNP) were synthesized and applied for the remediation of phosphate from aqueous media. The HA-MNPs, characterized by FTIR, TEM and HAADF-STEM showed the extensive coating of humic acid on the magnetite surface.

The highly toxic Cr(VI) is a critical component in the Chromated Copper Arsenate (CCA) formulations extensively employed as wood preservatives. Remediation of CCA mixed waste and discarded treated wood products is a significant challenge. We demonstrate that UV/TiO2 photocatalysis effectively reduces Cr(VI) to less toxic Cr(III) in the presence of arsenate, As(V), and copper, Cu(II).

Intranasal medication for eustachian tube dysfunction (ETD) is an established practice in otolaryngology through the effects of steroids, decongestants, antihistamines or a combination of the above in reducing tubal oedema. The author has previously argued that a double-blind, randomised control trial would be helpful in determining effectiveness of treatment, if a standardised head position, chiefly Mygind or Ragan, was adopted to maximise intranasal drop delivery into the eustachian tube orifice. One recent paper suggests that intranasal treatment is not very effective, but ultimately does not state whether a standardised head position was adopted.

Tonsilloliths are rare calcified concretions that develop in tonsillar crypts within the substance of the tonsil or around it. Large tonsilloliths can mimic many conditions including abscesses or neoplasms. Given the wide range of differentials, it is difficult to diagnose tonsilloliths unless there is a considered emphasis on thorough history taking, careful inspection and a detailed characterisation of the lesion through digital palpation.

Triquetral fractures are the second most common carpal fractures. Triquetral body fractures are the less common type of triquetral fractures but they can be missed on plain radiographs and a non-union can be associated with considerable morbidity and reduction in functional activities. We report a unique case of displaced isolated triquetral body fracture that was initially missed on plain radiographs and resulted in non-union.
