Methanol formation over Cu/ZnO catalysts is linked with a catalytically active phase created by contact between Cu nanoparticles and Zn species whose chemical and structural state depends on reaction conditions. Herein, we use variable-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy at elevated pressure conditions combined with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements to investigate the surface structures and chemical states that evolve when a CuZn/Cu(111) surface alloy is exposed to reaction gas mixtures. In CO hydrogenation conditions, Zn stays embedded in the CuZn surface, but once CO gas is added to the mixture, the Zn segregates onto the Cu surface.

The inherently low signal-to-noise ratio of NMR and MRI is now being addressed by hyperpolarization methods. For example, iridium-based catalysts that reversibly bind both parahydrogen and ligands in solution can hyperpolarize protons (SABRE) or heteronuclei (X-SABRE) on a wide variety of ligands, using a complex interplay of spin dynamics and chemical exchange processes, with common signal enhancements between 10 and 10. This does not approach obvious theoretical limits, and further enhancement would be valuable in many applications (such as imaging mM concentration species in vivo).

The moral self-concept (MSC) is an early indicator of how children view themselves as moral agents. It has been proposed that an important feature of an established self-concept (SC) is sufficient coherency in how one views oneself. Furthermore, the MSC is expected to develop into a multidimensional, hierarchical construct which is stable over time.

The syntheses and crystal structures of two thia-zinone compounds, namely, -2,3-diphenyl-2,3,5,6-tetra-hydro-4-1,3-thia-zine-1,1,4-trione, CHNOS, in its racemic form, and -[(2,5)-1,1,4-trioxo-2,3-diphenyl-1,3-thia-zinan-5-yl]acet-amide, CHNOS, in an enanti-opure form, are reported. The thia-zine rings in the two structures differ in their puckering, as a half-chair in the first and a boat pucker in the second. The extended structures for both compounds have only C-H⋯O-type inter-actions between symmetry-related mol-ecules, and exhibit no π-π stacking inter-actions in spite of each having two phenyl rings.

Signal Amplification By Reversible Exchange (SABRE) and the heteronuclear variant, X-SABRE, increase the sensitivity of magnetic resonance techniques using order derived from reversible binding of para-hydrogen. One current limitation of SABRE is suboptimal polarization transfer over the lifetime of the complex. Here, we demonstrate a multiaxial low-field pulse sequence which allows optimal polarization build-up during a low-field "evolution" pulse, followed by a high-field "mixing" pulse which permits proton decoupling along an orthogonal axis.
