Medaka is a small Asian freshwater teleost and has been an excellent model for fertilization studies for more than 50 years. Therefore, experimental procedures for in vitro fertilization (IVF) and cryopreservation of sperm are well established. In contrast, since the eggs or early embryos can not be cryopreserved, many females are killed to obtain unfertilized eggs for IVF.
