'Vaccinate my village' strategy in Malawi: an effort to boost COVID-19 vaccination.

Objectives: To boost COVID-19 vaccine uptake, an innovative 'vaccinate my village' (VMV) strategy using door-to-door vaccination by Health Surveillance Assistants (HSA) was adopted. In this study, we assessed the impact of the 'vaccinate my village' strategy on COVID-19 vaccine uptake.

Methods: This was a cross-sectional review of the data on COVID-19 vaccination obtained from the Ministry of Health, Malawi, from 11 March 2021 to September 2022.

An assessment of implementation and effectiveness of mass drug administration for prevention and control of schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminths in selected southern Malawi districts.

Background: Mass drug administration (MDA) is one of the key interventions recommended by WHO for prevention and control of neglected tropical diseases (NTD). In Malawi, MDA is widely carried out annually since 2009 for prevention and control of schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminths (STH). No study has been carried out to assess effectiveness of the MDA approach and to document perceptions of health providers and beneficiaries regarding use of MDA.

Strengthening primary health care at district-level in Malawi - determining the coverage, costs and benefits of community-directed interventions.

Background: Community-Directed Interventions (CDI) is a participatory approach for delivery of essential healthcare services at community level. It is based on the values and principles of Primary Health Care (PHC). The CDI approach has been used to improve the delivery of services in areas that have previously applied Community-Directed Treatment with ivermectin (CDTi).

Facility-imposed barriers to early utilization of focused antenatal care services in Mangochi District, Malawi - a mixed methods assessment.

Background: Focused Antenatal Care (FANC) is advocated by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a key service approach to improving the health of pregnant women. Four targeted visits to antenatal clinics are recommended starting in the first trimester. First trimester attendance for FANC in Mangochi District, Malawi was low at 8%.

Gene expression and immunohistochemical localization of megalin in the anterior pituitary gland of helmeted guinea fowl (Numida meleagris).

Megalin/the low density lipoprotein receptor-related protein-2 (LRP-2) is expressed in a variety of epithelia and mediates endocytosis of numerous substances. Megalin is also shown to bind clusterin with high affinity. In the pituitary gland, clusterin is localized in endocrine cells, folliculostellate (FS) cells and colloids.

Characterization and distribution of an arginine vasotocin receptor in mouse.

A cDNA, which has a high homology with teleost Platichthys flesus [Arg8] vasotocin (AVT) receptor (GenBank: AK033957), was found in mouse genome database. Analyses of the deduced amino acid sequence revealed that a cDNA has several features of AVT receptor. We tentatively named it as a mouse vasotocin receptor (MVTR).

Nucleotide sequence for cDNA of bovine mitochondrial ATP-dependent protease and determination of N-terminus of the mature enzyme from the adrenal cortex.

We have determined the cDNA sequence encoding bovine mitochondrial ATP-dependent Lon protease. Since the 5'-end region of the cDNA was highly GC-rich and thus could not be amplified by the 5'-RACE method, a genomic DNA fragment containing an in-frame ATG was isolated and sequenced. The translated amino acid sequence contained 961 amino acids with a calculated molecular weight 106,665.

In the field of dermatology and plastic and reconstructive surgery, fibrin gel is regarded as a material that promotes wound healing. To test the hypothesis that fibrin may promote the growth of the epidermis, we examined its effects on the proliferation of cultured keratinocytes. Human keratinocytes were cultivated in fibrin-coated wells, and the cell numbers and transforming growth factor (TGF)-alpha, secreted into the cultured medium, were measured.

Diurnal variation and age-related changes of bone turnover markers in female Göttingen minipigs.

We investigated diurnal variation and age-related changes in bone turnover markers in female Gottingen minipigs. Ten females, 6-9 months of age, were used for confirmation of diurnal variation. Blood was collected at 3 h intervals for 24 h, and bone-specific alkaline phosphatase and intact osteocalcin (OC) levels were determined by enzyme immunoassay and radioimmunoassay, respectively.

Distribution, histochemical and enzyme histochemical characterization of mast cells in dogs.

This study describes the distribution, proteoglycan properties and protease activity of mast cells from 15 different dog organs. In beagles and mixed breed dogs, staining with Alcian Blue-Safranin O revealed mast cells in all the organs examined. However, their numbers varied and they demonstrated unique localization patterns within some of these organs.

Standardized data and relationship between bone growth and bone metabolism in female Göttingen minipigs.

Minipigs have been studied as a model of osteoporosis. However, little information is available regarding their bone physiology. We established standardized bone data and investigated the relationship between bone growth and bone metabolism in female minipigs.

Age-related changes of bone mineral density and microarchitecture in miniature pigs.

Bone mineral density (BMD), distribution of its density and bone histomorphometric parameters were evaluated in lumbar vertebra of normally growing miniature pigs. The fourth lumbar vertebra (L4) of the Göttingen miniature pig were used in this cross-sectional study in vitro. The BMD of the miniature pig was similar to that of humans in tendency of gender differences and some growth patterns during puberty.

Overexpression of lipoprotein lipase improves insulin resistance induced by a high-fat diet in transgenic rabbits.

Aims/hypothesis: Dysfunctions of lipoprotein lipase (LPL) have been found to be associated with dyslipidaemias, atherosclerosis, obesity and insulin resistance. There are two conflicting hypotheses regarding the roles of LPL in glucose metabolism and insulin resistance. Whether systemically increased LPL activity would be beneficial or detrimental to insulin sensitivity is yet to be resolved.

Distribution and enzyme histochemical characterisation of mast cells in cats.

Mast cells from 15 different cat organs were examined in terms of distribution and protease activity. The number of mast cells in each site was found to vary when visualised by metachromatic staining using Alcian Blue. Enzyme histochemical analysis revealed the existence of two subtypes of mast cells.

Location of haemagglutinin in bacterial cells of Fusobacterium necrophorum subsp. necrophorum.

The location of haemagglutinin (HA) of Fusobacterium necrophorum subsp. necrophorum VPI 2891 strain was investigated by immunofluorescence, confocal laser scan microscopy and immunoelectron microscopy. The immunofluorescence study demonstrated the fluorescence specific for the HA on the bacterial cells and confocal laser scan microscopy indicated similar fluorescence around the cross section of the bacterial cell.

No effect of voluntary exercise on ovarian follicle in rats.

The present study was to clarify the relationship between voluntary exercise and follicular growth or ovulation. Rats kept for 4 weeks in a rotating drum with free access to the wheel, food and water ran 2-12 km per day. The number of ova shed after superovulation treatments and the number of non-atretic follicles were not influenced by voluntary exercise.

Establishment and characterization of a new canine B-cell leukemia cell line.

Implication of activation of intraperitoneal macrophages with bio-degradable microspheres.

To estimate the possibility that biological degradable starch microspheres (DMS) activate abdominal or intraperitoneal macrophages (IMP), two sizes of DMS (Spherex, Pharmacia, Sweden) were injected into the peritoneum of the ICR mice of 4 to 8 weeks of age. Three days after the injection, peritoneal fluid was collected and incubated for one hour at 37 degrees C under 5% CO2. The cells which adhered to the petri dish were IMP, to which DMS was added for 18 hrs.

Quantitative and morphological studies on the influence of zinc deficiency on the liver of pregnant rats.

The effect of zinc deficiency on trace metals in the liver, spleen, kidney, pancreas and duodenum was investigated in the control and zinc-deficient rats at 17 days and 20 days of pregnancy. Parasitological observations of chronic diarrhoea in suspected AIDS adult patients in Kinshasa (Zaire).

The parasitological profile of chronic diarrhoea in 46 Zairian adults suspected of Aids demonstrated that the frequency of protozoa was five times higher than that of helminths; 86% of the protozoa were sporozoa: Isospora belli was the most frequent (19%), followed by Cryptosporidium isolated for the first time in Zaire (8%) and Blastocystis hominis (2%). 37 of the 46 patients were immunodeficient.
